Is it legal to carry a 5 Gal. fuel container in the bed when traveling for those "will I make it to the next fuel stop" moments? Does anyone else do this. A saddle tank is too much $$$ at this time. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'll bet it isn't legal in all states, just have to check yours. I've gotten in the habit of filling up at a half tank (takes over 20 ga) when traveling into a unknown area, hate worrying while driving. I don't need an emergency can for that reason.

Do not see any problem. What is the difference of having 5 gal can of diesel vs additional fuel tank? Illflem is probably correct when stating probably not legal in all states. There is always an exception.

Its definatley a state to state issue. I think the biggest thing is whether you have a plastic can held in place with a Bungee cord, or a heavy duty "Jerry can" style container with a solid mounting bracket. Since Diesel fuel is not explosive and has no hazourdous vapors, i keep a 5 gallon can in my crossover toolbox when i am going on long trips.

I would think it's legal everywhere, otherwise how are you going to get any gas home for your lawnmower? Makes sense to me anyway.

Good information

Good suggestions! I think illflem has the right idea... don't go below half tank. :D

Thanks folks,

Sorta off topic. I asked my mechanic why my 95 Dakota in-tank fuel pump has never given me any problem in 160,000 miles. He asked at what point we fill the tank up. The fuel pump motor is fluid cooled and when the driver lets the fuel level drop below 1/2 the motor is no longer submerged and runs warmer. Drivers who let their tank routinely drop below 1/2 are the ones who get new fuel pumps every 50,000 miles. We NEVER go below 1/2. This doesnt apply to the CTD but is interesting to know. Filling at 1/2 is a good habit to get into.
