cat diesel in a tundra

Thanks, TDR Staff

1995 160 hp 12 valve fuel economy is great.

i dont think if yota were to come out with a diesel pickup that they would outsource the engine seeing as how they make there own diesels

Toyota has some excellent diesel engines in their Hino line of trucks. I bought a new Hino in 1989 and kept it 10 years. Very little problems and for a 22. 3K GVW truck, it had excellent fuel mileage.

Caterpillar itsself does not even make engines that small... I think the smallest engine that Cat makes themselfs is around a 7. 2L. . 3116 I believe... N e thing smaller then that and Cat usually outsources to Perkins or Mitsubishi... .

I was recently at the Sunbelt Agriculture Exposition and talked to the folks at the Toyota display. They said a diesel engine is in the works for release when ULSD becomes available in US. The people I spoke with there said it was to be a V-8! YUCK!!! I would hope Toyota would do better than that, but I also hoped the same for Isuzu with the duramax. These Japanese companies (Isuzu, Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi) already have great inline 6 engines which would be GREAT in a "full-size" pickup.

Actually its not outsourcing. I dont know about Perkins, but Mitsubishi owns Cat if I'm not mistaken.

caterpillar owns mitsubishi . mitsubishi builds cat'c excavators and forklifts

Cat also owns Perkins, for the smaller classes of engines. From now on they will be known as Perkapillars :-laf

Don't forget about the MitsuCat. 3066 is a great little mitsu in the smaller Cat exc.

How about the Catmatsu.

I here JD ownes them all... ...

Why? You don't like quality? Besides, the Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan are more American built than my Mexican Ram. A lot of American auto makers are outsourcing to foreign countries, whereas the Japanese auto makers are building plants in the US.

I will have to agree the highest quality and crash tests out of all recent years has to be awarded to Toyota. They are doing more to hire and produce domestically in the US than most any of our "own". Its not their fault they have the initiative to push beyond the dinosaur levels our "domestic" builders are working at. Toyota and Honda have definitely been setting the bar in recent years whether anyone including me WANTS to admit of not. If Toyota built a Diesel for US vehicles, I would pay sticker price without hesitation. They have stood behind every vehicle I ever had problems with, a few were bought used, past warranty and were still covered. Asking that of GM or Ford is likely to get you laughed out the door. I won't ackowledge DC since they are a sell out money monger that we should be ashamed of, if not for Cummins, I see no redeemable aspects to even count them worthy of any note at all. Dana and New Venture are worthy of better tasks than what they've been stuck in lately, DC, FORD and GM included. Toyota just needs to produce a true full size 1 ton truck and then the pressure on the arrogant "three" will be high enough to make their Exec's stand up and take notice. I'd like to see GM offer a few more sales and "employee discounts" to try and get out of their looming future wake up call.

Well, let's see here. My "American" Ram was built in Mexico by a German company. My "Japanese" Acura 3. 2TL-S was built in Marysville, OH (the engine was built in Ada, OH) by a Japanese company. Now, which is more American?

Rusty

Couldn't agree more Rusty. ;)

Let's see here, the sell out manufacturer who dumped its US employees and US based plants, in favor of another country,... . oops, I didn't mention the company is now owned by foreigners as well. Yup, that settles it, dodge is beyond a doubt leaps and bounds more reciprocating to the US market than Honda or Toyota will ever be  Man oh man, the real picture is clouded around here. :(

Wow that was a quick flame job.

I too served in the military and I too was stationed on Okinawa '59-'61. By no means do I mean to disrespct anyone. I just believe that the economy works best when America works. Yeah I know all about the Japanese cars being made in this country however you and I have underwritten their factories through tax breaks and subsidies which is my/our tax dollars. Also the majority of the profit go back to corp. hq which is in the mother land.

Sorry I just have a problem with imports of any kind be it cars, clothes, electronics or what ever. I also have a problem with imported labor. Just my . 02 worth so flame away.

So, do you still think it's more patriotic somehow for me to drive my Mexican-built Ram where the profits went back to DaimlerChrysler in Germany than my American-built Acura where the profits went back to Honda in Japan but American workers and suppliers garnered income from its construction?
