I went to a cell phone store locally and bought a little antenna, it's about 3" tall. It came with about 6' of chord and plugs into a special port on the back of the phone. The cost was $35. It doesn't have any kind of amplifier, but it adds at least one bar if not 2-3 more. I haven't dropped a call with it since. I use it in the house and in the car/truck. I won't go without one ever again. The downside to living out past the sticks.

Just an FYI ... not all cars can use these devices

Not long ago Jim [cumminstroken] posted about another devise... I was hot to go with it, looking into it was a good thing for me. . my wife's car had a factory wired phone in it and it worked poorly, I was going to install a Smoothtalker brand product. . called an install shop and they said no way would they install on a factory set up , asked why the reply was that many factory set up are amplified already.

checked into it and sure enough my wife's car was one of those. . good news is that during the checking out why her cell didn't work worth a darn is that they discovered they wired it wrong [two cables were reversed] so it didn't work as an amplifier. . it now works great.

Kilby,

I didn't realize you were on this board. Your gas skid works great on my YJ. I get alot of questions about it.

Thanks for a great product that works.

Brad. . tell us about the Amp you show... don't know anything about it

is it for long distance phones used for racing off road or something ??

Unfortunatly, I don't know anything about it. I don't even know if it works. I got it in a load of surplus material I bought a couple of years ago and I've never tried hooking it up.

Cell phone amps.

I've had the Smoothtalker amp. for over 2 yrs. , and it works great. It boosts ph. output from . 6 watts to 3+ watts, and boosts incoming signal 20-25 db. In a weak area it will boost my ph. signal from 1 bar to 5 bars, but if your in a dead area it will not help, you have to have a signal for it to boost. It's 6 V, but can be used in house with a 6 V power supply. Plugs into cig. lighter and converts to 6 V. It has an antenna on the box, but can be used with an outside ant. It was 225 or 250 when I purchased it. I live along I-70, and when you get 3 or 4 mi. off I-70, the signal really drops, and it has worked real well for me.

The reason the microwaves are "safe" is because they are so low powered.

If you are losing cell calls, the BIGGEST thing you can do for yourself is to mount a drill-through, center mounted, 5/8 wave roof ant.

It will make more difference than an amp if the wiring is kept perfect. In that range, a little bit of shield hole leaks out a lot of signal.

Be careful with the amp though. I would not ride in a truck with that thing running through a mag mount on the hood. Brrrrrrrr, that frequency cooks your turkey remember...

If you have the drilled ant and still need the amp fine. But dont run the thing without sheet metal between you and it!

1s and 0s- Now that you have my attention :) Would the mag mount antenna mounted on the roof, using the amp concern you (me)?

I've had the same good experience that Yogi Bear has, so I still think it's a good idea... depending on what 1 & 0 has to say.

Mag on the roof should be fine.

The thing to remember is, have the sheet metal between you and the ant.

I am not saying that your head will burn up either, but long term exposure to this crap this close, at these levels is a big no no.

We get plenty of it from the towers that are installed everywhere. There is no need to rad yourself any more. 3 watts that close would be... "bad"

If you are not drilled through your roof and grounded solidly to the sheet metal of the vehicle, you are not seeing your best gain. Ask any ham radio guy.

For me, getting rid of my glass mount, then my mag mount and going to a drill through was night and day different. When I got rid of the vehicle, I just left the 50. 00 ant in there.

By the way, I warned people about being careful, but I did not thank you for posting this.

Thanks for the original post!!! I know someone who is already drilled through roof who lives in a very rural area and could use this thing :D

Thanks again!
