I know the latest TDR came out with an article for ceramic paint coatings, but I wanted to find out what y’alls experiences have been. I’m hungry for more information.

Since I can’t take my new dually to the car wash, I’ve had to spend a few hours washing animal slobber and road dirt off my rig. (Went to an animal safari the other day, huge fun.) I detailed, vacuumed, polished the rims, the whole deal. But boy would I love to be able to just rinse it off. The silver paint is great at hiding dirt, but the advertising of just rinse it off has huge appeal to me.

So what have you used? Did you do it yourself? Pay a shop? How much was it? Would you recommend it? How do you like it? Anything to stay away from?

Just rinse it off will not happen. Most if not all coating suppliers will usually also sell the soap they want you to use for washing as using any soap may cause detrimental results. I continue to use Collinite waxes since I see no real advantage to coatings and Collinite can last up to and maybe more than a year. Don't believe all the hype of coatings, they can water spot, they will not live to some of the exaggerated longevity claims etc.. Before applying a coating the finish needs to be prestine and prepped in the right order as there is no going back to repair any paint defects ( swirls etc.).

Collinite 476S. 845 is also popular and a liquid but is 6-9 Months. 476 is a year or more and like all waxes, sealants, coatings it may vary due to the environment you are in. These are pure waxes with no cleaners or correcting properties. They have a cleaner wax but like all cleaner waxes it is usually a max of 3 Months. A little goes a long way so you do not want to apply with a trowel, the thinner the better. Sometimes it is hard to tell if your actually applying especially on light colors.

So nobody had coated any of their vehicles? Wow.... I really like my new truck, paid a ton of cash for it, I’d like to really take care of it. It seems as though this is the way to go. Would’ve thought more members would’ve tried this already.

I don’t want to spend all day washing and waxing this big son-of-a-gun every month.

You need to go over to autogeek.net and go to the forums. There are people there using coatings.

I bought the Collinite ASAP and used it also - impressive product for sure, easy to apply, even easier to polish out, if it lasts as long as they say then I'll never agsin using something else.

I have use the Collinite on the last three trucks very good product normally good for about one year, since i don't use car washes.

I just started redoing the 5ver, 7.5 to 8 Months with Collinite 885 and most of that time was in Az. It is also a pure wax for marine use so I can't complain. I think it is rated 9-12 Months. The longevity can vary for the environment your in. The 5ver has some oxidation I can notice when the Sun is hitting in direct sections. It still looks very good looking down the sides, so some Collinite 920 fiberglass cleaner and a orange pad on a rotary cleans it up very well so the oxidation at this point is minor. I think you will be happy with 476 as I have not had any water spotting, bird bombs clean off pretty easy and have not had any paint etching like I have had with sealants.

I have that same affliction with car washes, hand wash only. People ask why don't you use the touchless washes. If the chemicals at the touchless can remove dirt etc. I do not think they are good for my wax. paint.

Yeah have friend with a Trackhawk, they have done the ceramic and xpel wrap. Still alot of work to keep the vehicle clean, the have it semi show ready most of the time, have done some light mods to it. But the 3rd day they had it in for Paint Correction, Ceramic Coating, Xpel wrap, this is their 3rd or 4th vehicle they have used all that on. It too far away for me to get it done easily, my '19 Suburban was going to do it too, it adds up pretty quick for that large of a vehicle.

Keep us posted if you do it. I'm game for the plus and minus of it for sure.

I’m going to do it. It’s just a matter of time and finding a garage I can “borrow.” I have a full size classic John Deere tractor in my garage in the middle of restoration at the moment. This huge land-yacht of a truck won’t fit simultaneously. LOL

Put the ceramic coating on from that point on hand washing only and have to be really on your game due to minor scratching the coating. Great for driving on pavement, stay off back roads.

I am very late to this thread, but I have a real mess with my Sprinter that was coated when new. I had it done at Ziebart (it's their diamond gloss product I believe) and then reapplied for the 1st 4 years. I'm left with this white chalky residue thst needs to be buffed out constantly to keep a shine. Obviously, I am no longer going back for their annual updates.

I guess the moral of my story is be very careful with the product you decide to use.

This is a coating care thread, to much of a hassle for me. I will continue using a DA when applicable and Collinite 476 as it gives a year or more protection. On a side note I polished the Daughters Car and applied Collinite 915 in the Summer of 2017 when the first grandson was born. She brought me the starter the other day and although the car has not been touched in this amount of time it was still beading like crazy. Definately amazed me. If I can find the energy I may re-do it before we leave Minot. I used the 915 as it is made for darker colors and I wanted to see it myself. I have used it on my Driftwood which may have a slight enhancement over 476 but hard to tell.
Anyway the coating care thread
