After my last cleaning I noticed that the inside of my K&N filter was fraying metal wire. I contacted K&N about it and their sending me a replacement filter.

Spare me the preaching about K&N being crap, as I'm replacing it as soon as I can find a decent substitute. I just want to give a headsup to anyone that might be running one.

I ran a K&N kit (FIPK???) on my D-max for awhile. I didn't like it so I put the stock air cleaner assy back on. It had more power and ran better with the stock setup. No idea why. As soon as I went back to stock I could feel the difference. Save the D-max jokes because it was a terrific engine (I just sold it yesterday).

I'm sticking with the stock setup on the Dodge. I just don't see where the improvement is with the aftermarket filters unless maybe you're running lots of mods, which I won't do anymore.

There is a decent substitute, the aFe Pro7.

Ditto! and what is the recommended cleaning ..... every 15k miles or something outrageous... . (unless driving thru frequent locust swarms!)

We all know the don'ts of K&N. But have you ever wondered why a company like Banks sells them with their power pack systems. Doesn't it say right on the cummins web-site not to run K&N style filters? Why would Banks use them then if they're so called diesel performance experts?

DC at the dealership level sold the K&N filters as a "performance" item for quite a while...

And don't get TOO excited about Cummins recommendations for or against various items - they were on record as firmly against fuel additives too - until a big rash of injection pump problems raised it's ugly head - now they will gladly sell you a diesel fuel additive - THEIRS! ;) :D

Actually the cleaning schedule is closer to 30-50k. In my aFe literature it said that as long as you can see the wire mesh it's still working good.

Yeah, I though it was something crazy like that... I didn't want to over exagerate and I didn't have the lit handy. ;)
