Well, after searching all the posts, I couldn't find any concrete answers, so here goes.

Some of the people who upgraded their rear wheel cylinders to the Chevy 1-ton model (1 3/16 dia) mention their rear wheels locking up when braking after they did the conversion. This raises a couple of questions for me:

1) Has anyone actually had problems with this on slick conditions like icy roads or when braking hard on wet roads?

2) Doesn't the rear wheel ABS prevent the rears from locking up, or does it only work at certain speeds?

I would really like to improve the rear brakes on my 98, but not if I'm going to regret it the next time I apply the brakes on an icy road (especially if I'm coming down a winding mountain road that's slicker'n snot  ) and my rear end locks up when I apply the brakes.

Thanks for your input and experiences,

Interesting. I did the upgrade about 20k / 10 months ago and have no problem w/reard locking up or on icy roads? Guess I'm lucky?

I guess if it gets slick enough even stock size wheel cylinders might slide the tires.

I replaced my stock 1. 062"(1 1/16") dia. wheel cylinders with 1. 125" (1 1/8")dia.

With the brakes adjusted close, which I adjust at every oil change, I have all the rear braking I want, anymore would be to much on my truck. Most of the time I drive unloaded.

Hope this helps,

Kent

Yeah, I understand that. It's just that I don't want be trying to feather the brakes on ice and have the rears just clamp down without being able to finesse them. I don't know that anyone has had that particular problem, but I just wanted to make sure. The other thing I want to find out is if people are having problems if they have to panic stop on wet (not necessarily icy) roads.

Anyways, isn't ABS supposed to prevent lockup?

Just wanting to get more input. Thanks for the replies, guys.

had mie in for the last two winters ...

i don't even know it's there ...

abs does indeed prevent lockup

i don't tow much but just like the lighter brake pedal ...

and my driveway is so steep that you need 4wd when it rains ...

the county road to my driveway is so steep that the mailman just leaves our mail in the neighbors mailbox at the bottom of the hill when it snows so i am well aware of how it performs on icy roads
