I'm curious what TDR policy or policies were violated and caused the closing of the referenced thread?

I thought it was an interesting discussion of the dynamics of the market place and how to successfully market your truck.

Anyway, I want to make certain that I follow the TDR guidelines.

Jim,

I agree with you. I thought it was a good general discussion. I don't think the tone of the thread was specifically about Chris's truck. It covered generalities.

So we can continue here if anyone wants to keep that thought train going.

That said... I would buy a "rust belt" truck if I were not fighting rust on my own right now.

That said I think my next one will be a 2wd from the south someplace... if you drive all year round in New England, you learn to live with rust. It never sleeps.

Pastor Bob ?

I thought the discussion was good. It ,to me ,was just helping another member out, giving him ideas on possibly a better presentation on how to sell an older Cummins truck. I learned from it. Thanks to all who joined in with their ideas.

Wow,

I thought the thread was well within the guidelines. The priec was only mentioned once that I could recall. It's not like he was saying "Here it is, buy it now," like some have done in the past. He'd been trying to sell it for a long time, at what we thought was a fair price for the overall condition and upgrades, and were discussing better strategy of getting it out, like the previous people said.

I'll check the foum guidelines and get back here with y'all.

EDIT: see forum guidelines

"2. 3 ("Do not use the forums, to... . 2. 3 Post any form of solicitation on any Discussion Forum")

and... ...

4. 3. Moderators may delete posted items offered for sale within any Discussion Forum. "

While I believe this instance to be a strict interpretaion of the guidelines, it could be viewed as violating these 2 clauses.

In my opinion he was not trying to sell it to us, just asking for ideas on how to sell it. But I don't run the show here so I guess it was considered solicitation by the moderator. Too bad because he was getting good feedback. :( I guess PM is the only way to continue the discussion but that is a shame as we can't see what has been discussed. Sometimes these threads go on for months and sometimes I guess the rules are followed to the T. Oh well that's life on the forum. :-laf

I think the fact that the poster started the thread about his truck being for sale is where the issue lies. Technically it is a violation of the forum rules to do anything other than post a simple message saying it is for sale and here is the link. That will stay around for a couple of days so everybody has a chance to see it and read it, but, after that the thread will be closed per the guide lines.

I believe a thread that discusses the partuculars of making a vehicle sell well would be acceptable as long as there are no posts that directly reference a vehicle for sale. I will double check that and see.

Sorry guys, as good as the info and discussion was we still have to live by the rules that apply to ALL the forums. ;)

Cheers

Well,I for one took nothing other from the mans post but to say " Here is my truck, here is what it has and here is what it is priced at. Why can't I sell it?"

Sorry, but that is a little harsh shutting down the whole thread for that...

It is obvious TDR has a classifieds section. That member DID NOT make the post intending to advertise his vehicle for sale outside of the classifieds...

Cheers, Bill

It's kind of hard to discuss how to help a vehicle sell if you can't mention prices or link to similar other vehicles that have sold or are currently for sale.

I know you mods have a tough job to do, but I think it's pretty obvious to all of us here that this particular post was clearly not intended as an advertisement but as a valid discussion instead. If something absolutely had to be done, why not just edit his original post to hide the price or whatever so the valid on-topic discussion could continue?

Must be kinda hard to be a moderator... ... :) ..... I wouldnt want tthe job.

Lets continue on with the discussion ( not mentioning the price ) and see what other ideas we can come up with to help the TDR member sell his ride.

I guess this was a judgement call. I can't say I totally agree, but I suppose you have to draw the line someplace. To me, the thread was all about the market place for our 1st Gens. I never took his post as an advertisement for sale. In re-reading the initial post I suppose it could have been seen that way.

Kind of a shame as I've seen far more flagrant posts go unpunished.

Well having to be 'it' is sometimes a thankless task and from time to time, every one gets it wrong. (I sure as heck have). I felt that there was a leaning toward the selling, but I agree that the responses were very much first gen truck oriented. Lets just move on.

On another subject but also about an internet group, there is one called Dodge Talk that I stumbled on. If you own one of the other Damlier/Chrysler products, there is good input from a wide crossection of the public.

Thanks for the thread here guys. I knew when I was posting it that I was probably on the razors edge as far as forum guidlines go,and therefore I purposly didn't mention the price of the truck(atleast I think I didn't). If it was taken that I was just posting it up to try to sell it,that wasn't what I was trying to do,but I could see how a moderator would see it that way. I was just simply wondering why when I was looking to buy this truck 4 years ago it was hard to find them in good shape,at a decent price, and now only 4 years later I am having such a hard time selling it at what I think is a fair market value. I agree it isn't in the best shape compared to others, but it certainly isn't a rat. I think my biggest hurdle is my location, and the fact that the 2wd is the read-headed stepchild of the trucking world, even with desirable mods. Maybe this is just a way of keeping the truck tha I don't really want to sell anyway. Ever since I got the 03 1500 quad cab Hemi my life has not been the same. I really love the Cummins. Maybe I should reverse my bad Karma, and sell the Hemi instead. I bet that one sells quicker. Thanks again, and I hope I don't get this thread shut down.

Here's the scoop guys..... I'm going to re-open this thread for the purposes of discussing the demand/market for the 1st gen trucks.

This way it's not a thread that has the sale of particular truck at it's heart.

In fact I am REALLY interested in how this one turns out... . we've all seen such a big jump in the demand for the early trucks, lots of guys want to detail them, tune and mod them... . that has always seemed to be a growing trend from my porch chair...

So, lets have a run around about the growing/declining/cooling interest in these old gals... . go for it... :D:D:D

2x4 vs 4x4 rant: ideas behind the market discrepancy

Here is my opinion about the desireability of the 4x4 first gen diesel, esp the manual 4x4 - that in turn inflates the current market price of 4x4's over 2x4's. 1. the getrag 5sp seems to be more problem prone/takes a beating for some reason in these 4x4 trucks 2. The most common reasons for 4x4 seem impractical for a nice 1st gen. How many times a year are you going to go hunting in the snow, mud, and branches with your rare and cherry 4x4 first gen to make it worth the extra maint, weight and utility? How many times to you really need the 4x4, is it just for the capability to get into low range, or do you have a plan to go to some truck pulls? Wouldn't one be better off almost buying a 70's w300 srw 4x4 with a 440 big block to stomp thru the wilderness on those trips into the wild, and for all of your 4x4 needs? or anything else 4x4 for that matter. Maint costs, insurance, fuel, and higher cost to buy are just a few added costs of a 4x4 first gen that come into play here as well... .

"It's a Pickup truck man, it HAS to be 4wd?!?!?" ... OK my response is that I deem these trucks to be more inline with big rigs in their use. How many pete's and freightliners do you see on the highway are equipped with Fwd? (As in Front wheel Drive) I compare the cummins trucks to highway tractors more so than off roader pickups.

These are great trucks and I have nothing against 4x4 as it is, but in my opinion the benefit one gains from FWD does not nearly make them worth the added market value.

Bottom line is everyone has their own set of standards and needs. I for one had purchased perhaps the least desirable pickup of all the cummins 1st gens... A non I/c d250 727 auto/3. 07's and basic trim - rubber mats no headliner and roll up windows. Basically the lightest, oldest most basic farm truck. And now that the auto is ousted and a rebuilt getrag is installed in its place (thx Terry, Mike, and Travis) This truck suits all my needs and desires in a daily driver/primary vehicle, in over 2. 5 years and over 65,000 miles! I have driven over 15,000 in the last 4 months commuting to work and traveling, all on the new getrag all without a hickup and as an added bonus traveled from just north of willows, CA to just south of Ellensburg in Washington state ~ 600 miles on 24 gallons of Straight #2 diesel all with low rpm's and cab noise. So I don't see why people dog the 2x4 ext. cab srw so much either. Your truck would suit the true needs and desires of many people out there... Perhaps they just don't know or accept it!

Thanks for reopening the thread PB, I am very interested as well. I have more trucks than I need and have been approached about one of them and have used the figures and comments from TDR to guide my FIRM asking price. It seems to me that there is a pretty significant market still for these trucks. A good many folks have realized that they are the least expensive to run (no bombing thank you) and a real sound value for a regular commute. The added bonus is that if some dummy wants to smack you head on, he will have to deal with some solid metal and MR CUMMINS before he can talk to you. Even wrecked, there is still demand for the parts.

FWD / TWD. I have to straddle the fence on that. I never wanted to have a four wheel drive truck. I always got good service with a dually but for several years, I have had some long, top heavy (trailered) loads and I made a few runs with a FWD. Now when I have that particular load, I use the FWD. Other times I use the dually.

The 93 that I own has 500k miles and I figure that it has returned the cost of the truck COMPLETELY. Meaning it has been FREE based on fuel savings over any other truck I could have owned. A good first gen with a couple hundred thousand miles will do the same for anyone who will drive it conservatively and not dump tons of money on mods.

Now I am not anti bombing. They make one helava nice toy. And there is no limit on what you CAN spend.

Sure there is... it's called a wife! :-{} :-laf

Seriously though, It's nice knowing I can put 50k-100k miles on my truck and easily sell it for the same as what I paid (assuming it's in similar condidtion). 3/4 and 1 ton (especially 4x4) trucks are in high demand in this area and it's almost impossible to find a diesel with low mileage. Finding one that has never had a gooseneck and/or 5th wheel hitch is also almost impossible. I wasn't too keen on buying one with over 200k miles that had been used soley to tow a huge 5th wheel stock trailer through the mountains it's whole life... although I'm sure they have at least another 200k on them anyway. ;)

I have two in the drieway that have lived just that life, along with several others I've owned in the past. I'd rather have one that has been used (though maybe not abused like these two) than a creampuff that has never worked. (kinda similar to qualities you'd want in a girlfriend :-laf) They just dont seem to run as well when they reach 200-300K. But that is my preference.

And high mileage is another near non-issue. I got as much from my 91 with 315K on it as I paid when I got it with 240K. You get them often at a lower price, and have an excuse to BOMB or plain upgrade (PSC steering box, Brogenson shaft, Dana80, etc) stock components. By the time it's all said and done, you have all these new goodies, that bring your grand total in the rig to what you'd give for a lower mileage stock pickup with 15year old components.
