Hi Everyone I am going to shortly come into possesition of a southbend double disc clutch, now my question for everyone is, Can i replace the clutch in my driveway or is it something I need a lift for, provided I have a means of lifting the transmission i. e. a transmission jack that goes on the ground? I really dont wanna pay to have a shop install the clutch and I am not a fan of having other people work on my truck in the first place... . especially when you spend $2300 on a clutch.

Thanks, Travis

Did mine in the street in front of my house. Borrowed a transmission jack from my son-in-law (he works on OTR trucks at the local Cat dealer). Since I have 4x4, didn't even jack up the truck. Strapped the transmission/tcase assy to the jackplate, slid it back, down, then back and let the transmission sit under the truck till it was ready to go back in. Dropped it on a Thurs after work, did the flywheel resurface on Friday, and by Saturday afternoon was on the road again. Neighbors didn't even know what was going on.

Hi I bought this kool thing at the autozone near me that you can put in place of the saddle on a conventionial hydraulic floor jack that turns it into a transmission jack which is really cool in my mind anyways. So this should ease the removal of the transmission when the clutch arrives

Thats how I did the last 2 clutches in mine and the first one in my Moms. I just did #3 in mine on a lift that is way to go if you have access to one.

nps, must be a man, because we had 4 guys doing mine with a lift and a transmission jack. That NV5600 is extremely heavy. You'll want the right jack for sure! One of the guys helping me had done his 5 speed the week before and he said my 6 speed was way heavier than his. I'm not saying it isn't doable, but it won't be fun!

I'd be worried about the stability of a standard floor jack. Esp if you have the tcase attached to it. The thing is HEAVY and the base of a floor jack is narrow. The jack I used is made to pull trannys that sit behind Cat C13's and Cummins ISM's, so a NV5600 and tcase was small compared to the saddle plate on the jack. Plus the wheels were locking casters at the 4 corners, set at least 24" apart. With a std floor jack your rear wheels aren't going to allow any sideways adjustment.

That attachment you picked up might work good for pulling an automotive gasser transmission. If you use it, be careful, have lots of help, and don't let anyone start janking sideways on your floor jack.

I wouldn't use a standard jack either, get a OTC "Stinger" transmission jack, they are about 200 bucks new on eBay, or rent one. The 5600 is around 400 lbs, you don't want that falling on you!! Also it makes it a lot easier to line up with the adjustable plate on it, you can't move that beast around too easy by hand :D

I have an NV4500 5-Speed transmission and I planned on removing the t-case first anyway. Where could I pick up that jack you were talking about???

Ok I found that OTC jack on ebay and purchaced myself one looks like it will make life alot easier but I'm probably gonna wait till spring to do my clutch anyways.

I went down to Harbor Freight to look at the jacks when I was going to install my NV5600 and I just shook my head and walked away. They were all TOO LIGHT even though they were rated high enough. It would be WAY too spooky to get that big boy up in the air on one of those spindly POS...
