so i bought a new truck. its a 3500 ext cab longbed duely. it has a 5 speed and there is a "pinging" noise when i let out on the clutch in 1st 2nd and somtimes 3rd. i cant figure out where it is coming from. it sounds like the clutch at times and other times it sounds like the trac bar. the reason i think of the track bar is because it only does it when letting the clutch out in the lower gears. in the lower gears the truck torques more. it has done a few times in 4th and 5th but its rare. the truck is a bone stock 2002 3500 with 81,000 miles on the clock. anybody ever had this problem before or any ideas what it could be?

i have the same thing. had since the truck was new. i haven't actually figured out what it is, I think it's just the clutch coming together.

my clutch slips a little now that i added the edge, but it has 85,000 miles on it.

well i hope its nothing to worry about. i sold my 98. 5 with a 53 block and an auto because it got to a point where i worried myself to death everytime i started it that the transmission was gonna go out or the block was gonna crack. i told myself i wasnt gonna do that with this truck so im just gonna drive it till it breaks. it still would be nice to know what it is.

I don't know if your truck has them or not, but sometimes when a yoke dust slinger comes loose, they have a "ping" sound.

Nick

but would a ping on the yoke be caused by the clutch engagement?

or would it be a pinging type noise caused by rotation?

Aren't both those the same thing? ;)

My southbend clutch started making an unusual noise on engagement after about 6,000 miles. Then in noticed if I down shifted and let out on the clutch a little fast it did t as well. After a discussion with SB it was determined it was the clutch discs engaging and although not typical, did occur from time to time.

Go under the truck and tap on the driveshaft with something hard but lightweight, like a stout screwdriver. Same sound? Under high torque universal joint(s) will 'snap' into place like this when they're old and dried out and ring the driveshaft.

i guess it does sound like i asked the same thing
I mean that the ping I hear is quick and short and happens when the clutch plates come together.

I would think the yoke would be more of a RINGING sound, I think ringing would describe it better, constantly?

its a short ping/pop noise not every time but always iin the low gears when lettin out the clutch. could the carrier bearing be the culprit? the truck did sit alot before i bought it.
