Cold Air intake Upgrades

Hi everyone. I took delivery of my 2014 2500 laramie in december and am loving it! I was considering adding a cold air intake upgrade. I put one on my previous vehicle and it gave me about 3 mpg. Will this do the same on the 6.7L turbo cummins? I was looking at this one

As it mounts on the bottom of the ram air box and utilizes the factory gate.

I would use the stock box and filter.

I am not sure what your previous vehicle was, but on a turbo diesel you will rarely ever see any mileage gains from an air filter. Cruise is when the engine is barely working, if there was resistance to airflow at low power then the filter couldn't move enough air to run at 30 psi of boost.

I am a old diesel hot rodder and tractor puller. My 2013 is my 6th Dodge Cummins truck, all of the previous trucks have been modified by me. Injectors,manifolds,exhaust, intake etc. I am so impressed with the way my 2013 tows, I vowed to NOT change a thing under the hood. I think RAM got the intake right on these trucks this time, lots of filter and access to outside cooler air when it is needed.

The stock airbox will automatically switch between a true cold air intake and a warm air intake, depending on conditions (load, temp, rain). Like the guys above, I wouldn't mess with it.

Incidentally, I never saw a change in mileage with my last truck (a 2001) after an air filter system change (stock to AFE stage 2 w/PG7).

The most notable change I got after installing a AFE filter system on my 04 was, More turbo noise, a oily film in the intake after the turbo and a slight bit of dust in that oil.. I have switched to a Donaldson dry filter in the 04. The 13 intake will ramain stock, it works great why would I fix that????

S & B seems to be the best CAI out there for the Rams, it has a scoop that picks up air below the bumper in addition to the factory air port. The other the Home depot mod, where you do it yourself. Get a 4" flange and a piece of 4" lightweight drain pipe and make your factory air box have a second air source from under the bumper.

Don't TOUCH any of the newer RAM's!!!!!!!

For one you may void your warranty. They have made them correct right out of the box.

Use Fleetguard/Mopar filters and enjoy the ride!

Why do you want to ingests water and snow into the air box and ruin the filter and then ingests this mess into the turbo?

Do not say in cannot happen because I have seen it done. I friend of mine had a Chevy Duramax and went fording a drainage ditch with an air scoop below the bumper. This ingested the water and snow into the air box and then on into the turbo and engine before the engine quit. The engine had to be rebuilt because of this air scoop.

No, and I never saw that on a 5.9L Cummins, either. By design, a stock unthrottled diesel engine always runs with excess air at less than full load, so why would changing an air filter or inlet system result in a 3 MPG gain? With the cost and complexity of these engines, my decision was to leave this one bone stock and enjoy the warranty coverage. It has given me no reason to regret that decision.

It will. My father had a '68 Hurst/Olds with the air intakes below the bumper. You have no idea of the debris that would end up inside the air filter housing- and that's with a throttled engine, not a wide-open intake hooked to a turbo.

Not really an option, or requirement, for the complex box of a 13+, but the Home Depot mod works great on a HPCR 5.9. They don't pick up as much as you would think on the highway (moving too fast and the roads aren't full of light debris) and it's easy enough to plug I winter or when you think it might pick stuff up. I used to plug mine on dirt roads, but have quit. I check my filter and only once out of all the dirt miles I put on was there evidence of extra dirt in the box. Your just not making much boost on those roads. Snow I could see, and close it in winter.

This is exactly what I did on my 07.5 after I removed the AFE crap that was dusting and oiling my intake. What you have here in the picture is how mine is, but I added a 45 degree elbow, then a 4" RV dump valve, then a rubber step up adapter to act as a scope to funnel more air in. between the rubber and the pipe I put a piece of aluminum window screen to keep the leaves and birds etc. from getting sucked in. the valve made it so that I could just reach down just under the bumper and close it when it was raining or for the winter. I got better air flow from this than I did with the AFE. With the AFE I could turn the programmer up to a high setting and the ECM would give me the message that the filter needs to be serviced meaning that it was being starved for air. With the scope and stock filter box and filter, I never got this message. this means that I was getting better air from the stock box and better filtering.
On the new trucks, I definetly would not touch it.

I My 05 2500 was quiet, never lufted no oversized tires etc. Just a canopy and running boards plus a SS exhaust tip I put an S&B intake and manifold, high flow Shuttleworth muffler, smarty jr and deleted the silencer on my 05 CTD. I may have gained .5 in MPG at highway speeds. All it did was make the turbo noisier in the cab. The Shuttleworth is almost as quiet as stock. In my mind there is nothing more obnoxiuos than an unmuffled 6 cylinder. Reminds me of my old 69 chevy 3/4 ton 292 6 cyl when the muffler fell off. With those mods the seat of the pants feel is almost as good as my new 2013.
I remember taking it in a couple of years back for a emissions check. The tester told me that he gets tired of jacked straight piped diesel trucks that noise only exceeded by boom box audio systems cranking out hip hop. He says they curb em quite often.
My nieghbors sons both have 3rd gen trucks piped lifted and big wheels and tires of course. Great to be young. The problem is he is a bigger kid than they are. Picked an 08 CTD IN CANADA jacked up and deleted of course. Found that he couldn't get it title W/0 US emissions in tact. Cost them 3000.00 buying stuff off forums to complylabor etc. Got it titled and took it all off again.
What do you think a dealer sees when they get one of these in fir warranty? You think they don't look for an ECM tuner footprint?

Because of the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act a dealership can not void your warranty just because they found you have an aftermarket modification. They can and will void you warranty if they prove that the aftermarket mod is what caused the break or failure.

True, but then it becomes a case of their engineers and lawyers vs. yours. Depending on the value of your time, it would probably be less costly to just pay for the repair out of pocket anyway.

It sounds like the post 2013 rams are pretty well configured from the factory. Are there any improvements or mods that are worth while?

Being a diesel mechanic, I have not found anyplace under the hood that I would want to modify. I did add Pac air bags for my heavy horse trailer. Because I haul a GN trailer sway bars are not needed. If you haul a truck camper you might want rear sway bars. Because I am going to save LOTS of money by NOT fiddling with improvements under the hood, I will try to make the truck better looking.
