I finally got a used compass temperature overhead console . Does anyone know whether the two plugs that it plugs into are on the drivers side or passenger side and how to identify them? I found a plug that might be for the the temp sensor by the horns on the drivers side. It has a black wire and a purple wire with a green stripe. Is that the right one to plug the sensor into? I haven't been able to find a wiring diagram that has these parts on it.

Sorry I never did get back to you with the wiring information. I will dig it up tonight if you still need it.

As far as the plugs, are you referring to removing them from the donor truck? as they are not currently on your truck since it did not come with the console from the factory.

The plugs plug into the back of the mirror (self dimming) and the back of the console. The wiring runs down the drivers side A pillar. There are not easy to access plugs on the other end to easily unplug from the truck. All the wires tie into different places. I just cut them at the bottom of the A-Pillar and lengthened them out with my own wire.

To complete the install you will need the wiring harness (from the console as far down the A-Pillar as you can get), the temp sensor and pigtail, and self dimming mirror (if you choose) from the donor truck as none of these items are currently installed on your truck.

That's alright. We all have things to do. The console and mirror came with a wire about 7 feet long with a plug connector that has 6 pins on one side and 4 on the other. It is just like the the tow hooks I bought on ebay that were missing the mounting brackets. The guy said the donor truck had been crushed so no more parts were available. It looks like the wire is plenty long to reach under the dash, I just need to know where to hook it up. I appreciate the help. I can give you a fax number if it will make it easier for you. to clarify, the wire is plugged into the mirror, and overhead display, and then it is 7 feet to the end that I figure plugs under the dash somewhere. that is the plug I described. I took the cover off under the steering column and looked around with a flashlight but didn't see a place to connect it.

On the donor truck I pullled my harness off from there was not a simple plug that I could locate at the end opposite of the computer that is why I assumed there was not one there.

I do not know where you would plug the harness in or if you found the place to plug it in even if it would work properly.

As I said I can however provide an outline for the wiring.

Do a search. I remember in the past someone writing about this same thing. I believe it had been stated that if you had the harness with the plug, that it did plug somewhere behind the fuse panel. I haven't been able to locate one yet, so i'm not sure where exactly it would be. Hope this helps a little... Andrew

I thought I had read the same thing and have done the search several times now but have not found it. I pulled the panel off under the steering column and spent considerable time underneath with a flashlight and haven't found it. I wonder if I need to pull the dash and look on top instead.

Obviously the plug does plug in somewhere but who know if it will work right even if the plug is there. Just a thought. If it can be found, and does plug in that would be great.

Andrew, I see you have a 2001. Are you referring to an 01 as the 98 and older overhead consoles are different.

I will try and come up with the posting. I am not sure what years they were working with. I haven't tried to find it yet in my truck since I haven't had time to get over to pull one out of the junkyard yet. I know the 98 is different, but it still has to plug in somewhere.

I spoke to a buddy of mine at the Dealer today. He said from what he could tell in the wiring diagrams, that the plug is not in the harness prior to the 99 model year unless it had it from the factory. Sorry, it looks like you will have to wire it yourself.

The consol I bought suppossedly came out of a 97 and it shows how to program the compass in my owners manual. My truck was built in late 96. I just need to know what wire goes where. The dealer is no help. They say I need to buy the entire assembly for instructions, only problem with that, It is not available as an add on assesory.
