Who's Lenny and what form of diesel badness does he get busy with?

Diesel badness, that is hilarious. But I too would like to know.

Lenny of Dyno-Mite diesel performance, Monroe Washington. Diesel badness... . his truck I assume? 02 Ram, 12 valve, single turbo. I beleive the numbers were 617 on #2 and 817 w/nos.

-Scott

12-valve head or ISB head?

Running a P-7100, of course. (It's best to say that while taking a quick look at your manicure and polishing it on your shirt... )

200hp jump on the giggle gas - gotta love that.

Thanks for the info... SWEET numbers!

Matt

12 valve head. It was odd to see such a new truck in the lot with a 12 valve in it. First think I thought was p-pump conversion but... ... no, definitly a 12 valve. Didn't take long on the dyno to convince me he had a reason. Very  especially single charger.

-Scott

Not sure what turbo he is running but I guess that goes to show you that you don't have to have twins to make power! He was over 100hp over the 2nd place truck with his single! Not to mention it seemed to spool a lot nicer than the other trucks there with twins too!

I will let Lenny post his own info, but I will tell you he is not running some super secret turbo.

Congrats on the good numbers Lenny.

Heck yeah! Will the world ever know which single he's running? Out of curiousity...

Matt

AND can it hold on to the power the TST's are making on the 3rd gens??

With those numbers, I assume so

Excellent numbers Lenny  It was a beautiful day and a great crowd. I can't wait to see that twined Duramax make a real run and keep the tires on the rollers

Before we start... Great job on the #s Lenny

The twins make more power without the NOS. A set of properly designed/sized compound turbos will not see a lot of power from NOS but will spool faster.

he gained 33% more power with NOS. that means his turbo is significantly undersized for the application or is very hard to spool... I suspect the former.

You probably won't tow with your 600hp single. you definitely can tow with a 640hp compounded truck.

It is always easier and cheaper to make dyno hp with a single. You will get more usable power from the 'twinned' truck and it'll be a lot more fun to drive.

An induction system that performs well from 100-700+hp is not cheap and not simple to build.

Let the arguement begin... ;):D

Let the arguement begin...

Hey Mark,

First of all I have seen quite a few different compound setups on our dyno, and many different singles. I haven't obviously seen everything, but a good selection.

"The twins make more power without the NOS. A set of properly designed/sized compound turbos will not see a lot of power from NOS but will spool faster. "

I agree that compounds can make more power without squeeze, BUT most spool quite a bit slower. But when you refer to "properly" sized turbos, proper is really a relative term.

"he gained 33% more power with NOS. that means his turbo is significantly undersized for the application or is very hard to spool... I suspect the former. "

The turbo spools great! It's not undersized, just supplied with an abundance of fuel. :D

"You probably won't tow with your 600hp single. you definitely can tow with a 640hp compounded truck. "

This 617hp single tows full-sized pickups on a trailer over mountain passes quit well. I would be reluctant to tow with some "twins. "

It is always easier and cheaper to make dyno hp with a single. You will get more usable power from the 'twinned' truck and it'll be a lot more fun to drive.

It may be cheaper, but obviously not easier. How many others have 800hp with a single? Most compound setups have LESS useable power than our single charged rigs. The compounds seem to spool slow, light, then start to fall off. I look at useable power as spooling fast, sustaining full power, then falling off.

I am not saying that compounds don't work, I have a set on my rig that I enjoy. Both singles and compounds have their high and low points, and application. Its just that I am tired of people saying that what we have doesn't work, when they haven't seen it, therefore having no basis of comparison. I will post our dyno sheets later today. I would like to post some of our runs over compound runs for comparison sake, but don't feel that is right without the permission of the owner of the rig.

Mike :)

Hey mike I have a TON of space on my site. If you want to send me a bunch of those runs for comparasins I can put them up on a page or two and try to organize them so they are easy to compare. I may be up there later today to get my lil Falcon. Key almost broke on me last night when I went to leave so rather than have it brake off in the ign. I just had Joe run me home. Should have my truck back up and running here in the next hour or so! Oo. Oo. Oo. Yesterday was NOT a good vehicle day for me! :( :( :(

I'm really not disagreeing with you for the most part...

I'm not undermining his accomplishment. 800hp any way you can get it is a heck of a feat. I haven't made anywhere near that on a dyno yet... I hope to change that soon :)

I prefer all of my power all of the time not just when the bottle is ready.

When I said 'easier' I meant physically easier. A single is a much simpler install than 'twins'. They are fairly complex in install and take a bit of fiddling with to tune properly.

I consider properly sized to mean capable of driving with little or no smoke and still being able to pretty well flat foot it without being worried about EGTs. I'm not sayin "can't make smoke" but able to control it very well.

A good example. . the previous incarnation of my '01 dually ETH. I could tow with 200hp honed injectors with a 70hp timing box and never see the top side of 1325* grossing 27k# on a ~3-4% grade for over a mile. 40-50 seconds of 54psi on the cruise control at 84mph uphill

It was a hell of a ride. I never could have done that with a B1(16cm) which I consider one of the largest 'driveable' singles. The B1 would have made as much or most probably more power with a little squeeze but wasn't near as fun to drive and couldn't control egts as well given the same fueling level.

If you're able to increasepower by 33% on the juice the turbo is undersized for that fueling level... NOS is just turbo in a bottle.

If you light twins with NOS you can drastically increase spoolup on the dyno.

Don't get me started on dynojets and twins. . that's a long HEATED discussion in the making.

Last time I checked all of the fastest trucks are running twins... sbentz, maddog, comp461, jeff garmon, etc. All of the big hitters in the sled pulling world a using them too. There has to be a reason. ;) :D
