My battery has a blade-type switch on one post to isolate it. Will it ruin my converter to leave the 110 plugged in with the battery isolated? I am afraid the converter will keep trying to charge up a non-exhistant battery.

Are you talking about the battery in the trailer? It shouldn't hurt anything to have the battery disconnected but on some trailers the 12 V stuff won't work. Why would you disconnect it anyway? the converter should just keep the house battery topped off.

Frank-Yes The Trailer Battery

It seems to keep boiling out the water in the battery if I leave it plugged in constantly. I Have checked the converter and it is not overcharging the battery. Can't imagine the battery being low on water every 2 months.

If you are sure the converter isn't overcharging the battery then get the battery checked, maybe a shorted cell

I had a converter on a motorhome that would overcharge but only intermittently so it was hard to figure out. I think- it was a while ago- that I disconnected the converter charging wire, or pulled the fuse and charged the battery with a trickle charger that I plugged in to an outlet in the MH.

I hope this helps.

I worked over seas for a year. (Aug99 to Oct 00) I still have the OEM battery. The 5'er is a Jan 1999 model. It doesnt use water and has been nice to me so far. I left if hooked up the whole time I was gone. Maybe the converter is trickling a small amount of voltage and causing a little(or a lot of) heat in your battery.

Hope you figure it out!

Oh yeah, DRR-24V, I used to live in Santa Maria... . back in '67:eek:

My Dad was stationed at Vandenberg AFB:cool: It was a nice place to live! Maybe one day I will come back to visit Lompoc and Solvang. I lived in those cities also.

Battery Was Hot !

What started this post was my battery was pretty feeble (even when hooked to 110V) and when I pulled it out to check the water level it was pretty warm. The water was almost gone in three of the holes. I think my converter is O/C and that is why I wanted to isolate the battery. ;)

As long as the pos. terminal can't ground to the frame or the neg. terminal, the charger will not care if the battery is gone. There will not be anything there to store and call for charge. Possibly there is a small leak in the battery housing. I take the battery out of mine in the winter and leave plugged in for a small heater with no ill effects. Tim

The converter on my TT does the same thing. I have asked around and found that this is a normal occurrence. The blade switch is OK, and will not harm the converter. I simply unplug from time to time and watch the fluid level in the batteries. Some of the new rigs have a battery disconnect at the panel inside. I am going to put a switch in line as soon as I have time. Hope this helps... ... . Sarge

For those of you whose power converter is overcharging the coach battery/batteries, you might want to investigate the Progressive Dynamics IntelliPower 9100-series converter with the Charge Wizard accessory. We have the IntelliPower 9155 (55 amp) with Charge Wizard and only have to add water to the battery about once a year, despite the fact that our 5ver is continuously plugged into shore power while in storage.

This converter is available through Camping World.
