well went and bought some brake pads for the front of my 1998 dodge 2500 and got everything apart and couldnt get the calipar back far enough to get the new brakes on. It still needs to move back about 1-2 inch and i cant get it to move any more. Any one have any suggestions on how to go about this promblem? thanks

I've had good luck with an 8 inch C before I take the caliper off the vehicle. Open the cap on the master cylinder before you squeeze.
Good luck

I use a 1/4" or thicker steel plate on the piston and a big C clamp to compress the piston. If that is not what you are having trouble with, the other possible issue regards being sure the sleeves outside of the caliper hold down bolts, and the bolts themselves are retracted enough for the caliper to slide into place. Other than this, you did not give enough detail to help us diagnose your problem.

Be careful! Brake fluid will eat thru your
paint! If you clamp down on the caliper
piston and have the master cylinder cap off
make sure you suck some of the brake fluid
out first (not all of it, maybe half of it)
because when you squeeze the puck in you are
forcing fluid back up into the reservoir.
If you force it too fast it will GUSHER out
all over your engine and maybe the paint on
your fenders! It will EAT the paint off to
the bare metal.

I prefer to open the bleeder screw so that dirty fluid is not pushed back into the system when retracting the piston - just hook a hose to it and point it into a container so it doesn't run everywhere.

Well i said heck with doing this brake job myself and i made an appointment with a local brake shop. I guess this is what i should have done in the first place. Thanks everyone for the help. Nick

Hey Bignick 33,
Just kinda wanted to through this out there #ad

It's gonna be kinda hard to get it to the dealer with out brakes, huh?

Ron

well joe,
first of all its not going to the dealer, its going to a local brake shop(i would be stupid to take it to the dealer) and second i didnt wait till the brakes were all the way wore out. I might not be the smartest guy on here, but i'm not the stupidest. Just thought i would throw this out there.
