Firsr time 4BT owner, advice on lift pump swap?

New truck current member

I’m looking at a 2005 QCLB 4x2 with an NV5600. I have a couple of questions for you. Is it normal to feel a little vibration at idle? The drivers side mirror vibrates a little and I can feel it in the steering wheel. It’s nothing crazy it just feels a little like a tractor. It basically is haha so maybe it is normal. It ran and drove really nice, no haze at idle or blow by.

It has 170k miles on it and it is stock except some edge programmer that he used on level 2 for towing. The man was in his 70’s and has owned the truck since 2006 with 60k miles or so. It has an aftermarket fuel filter setup mounted on the frame. It appears to be pretty well taken care of. He’s asking $19,500 which I think is pretty high but we live in weird times.

Thanks,
Joey

Just to clarify from my first post, it’s not shaking the truck or shaking the doors. It’s not a low frequency like a miss it’s more of a buzz I guess.

If I do purchase the truck I will be making money off of my current one and I will be putting some money back for injectors or any other surprises.

They are ridiculous. If it was 4wd I bet it would be $28k. Oh well got to pay to play. I think it will serve us well for towing.

Make sure it is a NV5600. In 2005.5, the NV5600 was dropped and the Mercedes G-56 6 speed was introduced in conjunction with a dual mass flywheel. A vibration at idle with a G-56 would indicate a dual mass flywheel failing and coming apart.

Well today is the day. I’m supposed to go get it this afternoon. I’ve got a 2011 Silverado 6.0L Vortec that it will replace. I’m a little nervous going to an older truck with higher miles. It will put some money in the bank and give me better towing performance but my stomach is in knots.

Congratulations! Relax and enjoy the truck. Glad to hear you got the 6 spd manual transmission you preferred. Just remember to upshift early - especially when the truck is empty. Peak torque is right at 1600 rpm. The engine will pull hard, even at 1400 rpm.

You will be smiling when you hook up your trailer.

Thanks, I’m sorry I made multiple posts kind of about the same thing. We were supposed to do this deal last week but my friend from work backed out on me at the last minute and I’ve had too much time to rethink things.

I think that if for some reason I don’t like the truck it would be pretty easy to resell. I don’t anticipate that happening. Yes it’s an older truck but I believe in the 3-5 years it will depreciate a lot less than my gas burner.

Well I bought it today. I’m so excited to have one of these trucks. I’ve loved them for 20 years. I hope I can get a few more out of this ole girl.

If the vibration is problematical for you, inspect the vibration damper. If the rubber at the rim is beginning to crack, consider replacing it. Although expensive, a FluiDamper from Geno's will reportedly smooth it right out.

I put the old girl to work this weekend. We left Birmingham on Saturday morning and headed down to Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, AL for a nice long weekend at the beach.

I’m really happy with the truck. It towed great, once I got up to speed out on the interstate I set the cruise at about 63mph and sat back and relaxed. I didn’t have to shift out of 6th one single time. The highest egt I saw was about 1200 on a couple of the longer “grades” we have here in AL. I can also tell a difference in having the LWB vs the SWB in my Chevy. I never had any issues with sway before, but I could feel it more when an 18-wheeler passed. This truck seems a little more planted. It was a little nerve wracking jumping in and taking off in a truck that’s new to me but it did the job just fine. Hopefully it gets us back home tomorrow without any issues. Anyway I’m just rambling but so far so good. Also I highly recommend this campground for anyone interested.
