Any of you guys got one of these near-by? I took this on October 11th here in NC Ohio on a sunny Autum day. Not me fishing. I think he cought something though
I was a state bridge inspector for a couple years and had to go to school in Indy. Over the weekend I drove to Springfield Ill and along the way I stopped at one and gave it a once over. Pretty impressive structure, it was no longer open but for ped. traffic. We dont' have any out this way. We do have some impressive trusses that are fun to climb. Our largest has a 200' clear span and standing at the peak I was about 85' off the river below. (That's a long ways for a desk jockey!)
PA has quite a few wooden bridges, many still open to traffic typically with a 3 ton limit or less. Unfortunately, they attract vandals who delight in burning them.
I was pretty young but I can remember the bridge connecting PA to NJ until the 1955 flood washed it away. http://www.njskylands.com/tncolumbia.htmIf you read down towards the bottom, the article gives the pretty impressive specs.
We have a few out here in eastern PA. In fact there are signs just north of me to follow a covered bridge tour. I'm not sure how many are on the tour though... . maybe I'll have to go for a ride.
