I've just discovered that I have a cracked block! Apparently a previous owner allowed the engine to freeze? I have always parked in a heated garage so I don't know how I could have caused this to happen. Anyhow I am looking at a major repair. If anyone has any suggestions as to the best option, I am all ears. So far the only estimate I have is $7700 for a new block only, using the old parts. Would a short/long block/used engine be a better way to go? Any ideas would be appreciated.

If the truck has no mods..... call 1-800-diesels & talk to a Cummins rep & explain your situation. They replaced mine & I only had to pay labor. It came to $2700 with install costs.

Cummins724... Just wondering, you apparently have 'mods', and a lot more than I do, how is it that Cummins was willing to just give you a block? I also have a '99, with 150,000 mi. The crack I discovered is on the passenger side just below the freeze plugs. I'm assuming '53 block' refers to the engine number, mine begins with '56' if that is important.

The "53" block refers to a "53" cast into the block and can be found just below the injector pump.

I had problems at 60k miles & had no mods at that time... . the truck lost coolant & service tech couldn't find it at that time. It was a weep hole & coolant burned faster than it could be spotted. I noticed the weep hole at 130k..... by 140k it was 4 inches long. I called cummins & told them that I had a cracked block & that it was in the service shop 3 times for lost coolant before 100k mile warranty expired. They offered to pay for parts... . no questions asked. I had the engine out of the truck when I called them & they said to drop it off. I delivered it to them in long block form & had it back 3 days later. I had the engine pulled/replaced by a certified tech.
