Pinion gear is cracked in the rear end, bearing spun in the carrier. :{ I'm being told that pinion AND housing needs to be replaced... sound right to you guys? If so, does anyone have a good source for parts on the Dana 70 or someone that can lead me in the right direction? TIA

bearings and gears yes... but housing ??/

not so sure on that one. I've done some major damage to gears, but never needed a new housing for a spun bearing or race. Cracked axle tubes yes, but not spun bearings.

Spun bearings can ruin the bores where the races sit. You may want to look around for someone who can "re-true" the faces. Hard to say without seeing it but I would guess a new housing is the easiest and most profitable way for the dealer to fix the problem. Otherwise, I would look for a Dana 80. I've seen them on ebay for $1000-$1500 which may be less than the labor/parts to fix your current axle.

I think this guy even has the tool:

Looks like I can get the parts (case, r&p, seals, bearings, etc. ) new for about $430... not including any labor. I've done the swap on my sprint car rear end many times, but they don't have the press fit axle tubes. Anybody have any experience on swapping the case out? I'd like to know if anyone has done something similar and how long it lasted... I'm pullin heavy loads all the time and I'm concerned about the structural integrity of the axle after breaking it down and rebuilding it. Thanks for the reply's.

Are you talking about the axle housing or differential case? The ring gear bolts to the case and is an easy swap. The bearings are pressed onto it too.
