Truck in shop right now reading P0336 and other codes too. Is still under the 5yr/100K engine warranty. Dealer is trying to tell me the Crankshaft Position Sensor is not covered under the engine warranty. This does not make any sense to me as it is mounted on the engine, primary purpose is to make engine run correctly, and is a part supplied by Cummins.

Is it true that this sensor is not covered under the engine warranty??? Why would that be?

Thanks Much.

My Sensor went out at about 86,000 miles. I took it the dealer in town and he said that it was not covered under my warranty because it is not a internal or major part of the engine. Not happy I went another Dodge dealer and he also said the sensor is not covered with about the same explanation.

So I ordered the sensor for about 60. 00 bucks and it took about 30-45 minutes to put it in. You have to remove the starter but it was a really easy straight forward task. Beats paying labor at the dealership. PM me if you need any help.

Electric components are rarely covered under warranties. Your crank speed sensor was probalby covered under the 3\36 warranty.

Check your warranty book for engine 5/100,000 parts that are covered under warranty.

Also some items that you would not think about being covered are covered under the emission warranty which I believe is for 7 years. This is in your warranty book also.

Im probably wrong, but if the truck was gas and not diesel wouldnt it be concidered an emissins item that would be covered by a federaly mandated 5\50 warranty? They developed the vp44 for emisions. Since that sensor affects the way the pump works I would think it would be covered.

Well, it's fixed now. Did it this weekend while the weather was warmer outside. I too thought about the emissions warranty angle. Didn't ask the dealer about that directly, but they said they tried several way to have it covered and no-go. So, I decided to do it myself. Wishing now I hadn't because it was a royal PITA to get out and get the new one in. Works good now though.

I could see that electrical parts might not be covered by the 5/100 warranty. If so, would a person be SOL of their ECM went out or would that be covered? It takes more than just metal pieces to make the engine run - at least in my book.

Thanks everyone for their input.

I feel your pain. Call the 800 # and gripe, Cummins supplied it with the engine!

They gave me grief about the dowel pin breaking the case, it took them about 10 days to repair it. After I got it back, I retimed it, repaired several oil leaks, degreased the mess the KDP caused. Buffed the scratches (from no fender covers) off the fenders and straightened the bumper up, the fasteners weren't tight!

Poor tech, hope the dealer kicked in some "salary. " They called me and asked how to get the head bolts out of cylinders 5 & 6. . ah. hh those rubber grommets/plugs. Great they said now we don't have to pull the engine.

I digress. . good luck.
