At about the same time my abs quit my cruise control also gave up. I have looked for a fuse and cant find it anywhere. My dash indicates that it turns on , but it will not set speed. What do I need to look for now? Thanks, Moe Also in a previous post, I replaced the speed sensor on the rear end, but it didnt help with the ABS problem

mine is doing the same thing after the ABS quit working (fixed now but still no CC) say does your abs make a tug when you first turn the key on? mine does now.

I didnt get my abs fixed since they wanted so much for the ecm. my brakes work fine otherwise. The warning lights are still on all the time. I would like to fix my cc but I dont have the repair manual for the 2000 CTD. Hoping someone might have that info handy.

When the CC went out on my 2000, I was advised by this estimed group to check under the battery or near the battery on the driver's side for a vacuum line that had been eaten through by fumes.

That was the cause!!

Fitted a slightly larger piece of tubing over the cut away bad portion, and it has been working ever since.

Worth checking, cheap easy fix

The speed sensor on the rear differential is probably shot. It is cheap and easy to change and, I think will fix both problems.

Replaced the rear axle speed sensor. Didnt make any difference. I might of found my cc prob. Theres a rotton hose on the vacumn circuit. Am changing it today.

If you haven't already, you might look at the front wheel bearings also. When they get a little worn they sometimes trip abs codes. Have you read the codes ?

Dealer checked for codes and found none. Its going to be the ecm that has to be replaced for big bucks.

Success. The Vacumn line running from the firewall to the CControl servo was just plain rotten and broke everywhere I touched it. Ran a new vac hose and CC works great. JPope called that one right. Thanks, MOE

Under driver's side battery on 1998. 5 - 2001 vacuum style and from 2001. 5 through 2002 the ecm does it all. Easy way to find out if your 2001 is vacuum or electronic cruise is locating the servo under the battery or the second (manual transmission) or third (automatic transmission) cable going into APPS.

Godspeed,

Moe, can't remember if your 97 has the same brake system as the 96 or not, but I ran into the same problem as you on the abs. A friend of mine that worked for a dealer told me to unplug and pull the abs controller ( was in the cab on my 96 mod. ) He said you don't even want to price the controller. The light went off and all was well but this was on the older style setup. He said this fix wouldn't work on newer models. I know this was not the proper way to fix something, but the brakes worked alot better without the abs functioning.

okay,,, i don't seem to have any vacuum hoses running at all underneath the driver side battery,,, only electrical wires,,,,, i believe i have a 2001. 5,,, (6-speed) so whats the next step? in diagnosing this thing?

Is the "set" button restricted at all? Some have found it stuck and worked the button until it became free. If it is not the button my next guess is the wiring or the ecm. If you know someone with a 2001. 5 with manual transmission swap his ecm in and see what happens.

Godspeed,
Trent

OK, you looked down right in front of the drivers battery and you did not see the vacuum cylinder for a cruise control below the battery???? Right? SNOKING

I bought my truck used and found that the cruise control did not work. Checked the vac line and found vac line elbow on top of vaccum pump had deteriorated from heat & collapsed... replaced that... still no CC. Checked speed sensor, was ok; checked servo & found no signal. Checked switches on steering wheel... all OK. As last resort, took to dealer & found that CAB (anti-lock brake) module was not the correct one for my truck. Replaced... $$$. Then anti-lock brake light stayed on and no CC... PCM was replaced and ECM reflashed ... $$$. CC worked and anti-lock brake light went out.

CC did not act exactly like my other vehicles did, in that when I found the need to accelerate with CC engaged, it would not return to the original setting and had to be reset. It worked fine except for this minor glitch and I could live with that.

Recently replaced APPS with one of TIMBO's units, since then I do not have to reset CC after acceleration. Another unexpected benefit from TIMBOM'S APPS conversion!
