Cruise Control Surge

A friend of mine has an '03 with automatic transmission and about 19000 miles so far. With the cruise control on, (on flat ground) there is the sensation of a "surge". You can feel it, you can see a 1 to 2 MPH fluctuation in the seedometer and you can hear it in the turbo whine. The tach does not change. They have had it in to 2 different Dodge Dealers with no answer to the problem. Has anyone else had this happen?

Hmm, I use my cruise almost every day. 35 miles to work and back on rolling hills at about 70-75mph. It's as steady as can be. Uphill, downhill, flat, it stays exactly where I put it without fluctuation. I also did a trip to Las Vegas from San Francisco, and a couple to LA. Same thing for 600 miles. No variance at all, even up some fairly steep passes.

Wonder if anyone else is experiencing it?

I Drove this one the other day, and if you started to pull a slight hill then the surge went away. Flat and level it acts like it is "hunting" to keep the speed steady. With the CC turned off there is no problem noticed.

I have recently begun to notice a very very slight surge that comes on once in awhile if I hit an extremely hard jounce in the road, or a sudden strong wind change with cruise on. In other words, a sudden change to vehicle dynamics. The cruise can get a little confused and go into a mild oscillation mode, which I would consider completely normal, given the size/weight/power of the vehicle. It always damps out within 2 seconds, and as I said it's never anything I would consider worrisome, but it is noticeable.

Your friend has a 100,000 mile warranty. The problem will either get better, remain the same, or get worse. If it remains the same, he'll get used to it. If it gets better, good! And if it continues to get worse, the warranty will fix it. :)

My cruise control hunts when i am on flat ground doing around 70 mph. First noticed it when going across Nevada and saw that the boost gauge was fluctuating. started watching it closer and noticed that it would get in a regular rhythem and wouldn't quit until I hit a hill. Turn the CC off an it quits. if it wasn't for the boost gauge I might not have noticed it. Taking it in to the dealer when I get the recall stuff done. If anyone finds out what is causing this, please post it. TIA

This sounds exactly like what my friend is having with his truck. If your dealer can figure this out let me know what the answer is.

This truck is driven by a salesman and the miles go on pretty fast so for warranty it Will need to get looked at in the not to distant future.

Thanks for the reply.

Mine has a slight surging to it also, You can't hardly feel it letting off but you feel it when it kicks back in. It does not show on the speedometer or tach. The dealer said he could not feel it but it is definitely there at all speeds. I will wait to see what happens.

I also have noticed a slight surge every once in awhile. I have a six speed, and didn't notice the surge until around 18000 miles. It doesn't do it very often, but you know it when it occurs.

Surge at 55mph

Heck... . I thought it was just me all this time as no one has mentioned this problem before. My truck surges constantly between 55 and 60 (approx 1-2mph). Runs smoothe once I set the cruise around 70.

Am also due for a recall, will speak to service mgr who is a "beer" drinking buddy. More to follow...

Mine does it also. It also only does it when on flat ground or a slight down hill grade. It was much worse and more annoying when I was running my pressure box on the high setting. It only does it once every couple weeks. I am not sure if it is just a glitch or not. If it starts to do it with the box on, I either turn the cruise off and then back on, or dial the box back to a less agressive setting.
