I thought the APPS was an auto-only thing in the earlier trucks... the reason I was able to simply add two $30 switches and gain cruise control?? I have a manual.

That may be true, I know that of the HPCR's 03-04. 5 were the only years with an engine bay APPS. . As to if they all had it or not, I am not sure.

So your 04. 5 doesn't have an APPS on the intake manifold?

Its not, ALL Dodge trucks with a Cummins engine, manual or auto, have had an APPS since 98. 5, or they will not function. The APPS drives the fueling system to allow the engine to rev. A VP pump has no mechanical linkage connections. The fuel delivery solenoid in the pump is set by the ECM based on the input from the APPS.

The 3rd gen manual trucks generally mounted the APPS under the driver side battery to remove it from engine vibration. The autos retained the engine mounted APPS for the TV cable function until that was eliminated. The function of the APPS, auto or manual, is the same. Fueling is determined by the readings from the APPS based on pedal position.

The big differences in the years is where the CC function and logic is stored. Prior to 05 all the way back to 91 the logic for CC has been in the version of the engine controller present and the function has been with a vacuum controlled cable. Since 05 the actual function of CC is now totally electronic and not connected to the APPS in any way. When cruise is activated and foot is removed from the pedal on the 05+ trucks APPS readings go to rest position and the ECU maintains speed. Prior to 05 a cable pulled the bell crank the APPS was on and the ECU used the APPS signal to determine speed.

I agree they all have to have an APPS, so in saying it was only 03-04. 5 I was referring to the external APPS, and I wasn't talking about 2nd gen as this is a 3rd gen forum.

Not all 3rd gen trucks have the APPS that is apart from the pedal. There is no engine bay mounted APPS on any 05+truck. It's all in the pedal, and the "fly by wire" setup is in the pedal now. There is no throttle cable on any 05+ truck.

That may be what you are saying, but looking at your post and looking at your sig, it sounds like your trying to say your 05 has a enigine mounted APPS, which it should not.

I was only addressing the ambiguity of these 2 statements by saying all these trucks since 98. 5 have an APPS. Both statements seem to question whether an APPS exists in what configurations and what years. The reference to 2nd gen is simply to point out an APPS must be present because of how engine rpm is controlled and similarity to the implementation.

So your 04. 5 doesn't have an APPS on the intake manifold?

The second part addressed this question, the early 3rd gens mounted the APPS under the battery in the manual trucks not on the engine. The poster has a manual and was just clarifying that as you likely missed it.

Both my posts stated in MY 05 the underhood apps was eliminated, not sure where you saw I said my 05 has a throttle cable?

Since the thread is about CC problems, all the APPS info was the setup. There are some subtle differences how CC is implemented in the different years and how they react to external stimulus, referenced by the APPS location and CC implementation.

CC surge on an 04 generally has completely different causes and resolution than an 06, they are not quite the same animal.

Thats the comment that makes it sound like all 3rd gen manuals have an APPS under the battery, and auto's on the intake. When its just the 03-04. 5's.

I was missing some key words in my statements, but it sounds like we were saying the same thing. .

The autos retained the engine mounted APPS for the TV cable function until that (engine mounted APPS) was eliminated.

Auugh, now I see what you interpreted. Bad wording, my 9th grade english instructor would make me stay after class for doing that. :-laf
