I think I found the problem. The Chevy site doesn't have pricing for 2002 trucks (the first year the Duramax will be available). The price you got was for the old 6. 5 liter V8 Turbo Diesel. The Duramax is a 6. 6 liter unit.
For up-to-date pricing information use Kelly Blue Book site at kbb.com they have the pricing for the 2002 trucks.

Durability can only be determined over time. One thing for sure, it is a real nice driving package. If you have to have an auto, afraid the GM is the way to go, for the time being.
