Custer SD In January

We are moving across country, the middle of January 2008. We are leaving the Seattle, WA area and riding down I-90 towards the South Bend, IN. area. We wish to stop in Custer, S. D. and visit Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monuments; but finding it difficult to locate a hotel open in the area. It appears as though most hotels close during the winter and our options slim, either the "Super 8" and "Days Inn" in Custer.



Wherever we go, it must be LARGE truck friendly. I will be driving my truck (22’ long) and have my wife’s car on a 20' trailer and pet friendly.



Does anyone have experience with this area, the mentioned hotels, or sights to see in town? My wife believes that Custer, SD is a “hole in the wall” and there is nothing there. I have no clue, so long as I get to see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse.

Why not stay in Rapid City?
it is close to both.

It appears as though Custer is centrally located to see the two sights.



I do not know, I have never been there.

Check out the spearfish canyon lodge. They are open year round and it is a really nice place and not far from the interstate and the monuments. Deadwood is probably the most centrally located. It is only an hour drive at most from most places in the black hills.

January average high temperatures are in the 30's with lows typically in the teens. Below zero readings are not uncommon but usually the severe cold temperatures are short lived. Average snowfall is 5 - 15 inches, mostly of the light powdery type. The northern hills generally receive more snow than the southern part, making them ideal for winter recreation.

I have heeded the counsel given by my peers and made reservations at the Holiday Inn in Rapid City. I will base my movement from there and spend two days seeing the sights and tastes of the local area.

In downtown Rapid there is a resteraunt in an old fire house. It is called the Firehouse brewing co. they micro brew there own beer and have awesome food it is a must to eat at.
