Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Fuel Mileage Question

I am still awaiting a response from them. I have ran several HTT chargers. What kind of HP you looking for I had a 62/12 on my truck and was towing 12-13K around with 3. 54 gears, and 33" with very good luck.

I am OK with the power, but would like to reduce the EGT and smoke, especially the EGT. I do not know what my HP is. With the info below, do you have any idea?

2WD ‘96, Automatic (DTT), with 3. 54 gears (19. 5 tires/wheels)
#10 plate
boost elbow
370 injectors
Timing at 16*
3KGV spring kit
60-lb (as I recall) exhaust valve springs
Marine Head Gasket
4" exhaust and muffler (3” turbo through 3-inch US Gear Exhaust Brake to 3” resonator)
BHAF
Between 25 to 30-psi boost maximum.

I would bump it up a little, but I know my HX35 if I run it at 32 psi or so on a climb it will start to build heat in the engine.

I would put an HTBG with a 12cm or 14cm. Based on if your wanting some more rpm power or a little faster spooling.

i would guess, 350-maybe 400 hp with your current setup, i would bump the boost, maybe around 38-40, that will help you egts, and smoke a bit.

I really appreciate your responses. I am getting ready to spend quite a bit of my beer fund, and your input is appreciated. I have been away from this stuff for about four years.

Actually, I can only run it at 20 to 25 PSI on a relatively steep climb, because I have to back off to keep the EGT below 1300 (before turbo). On a real long steep grade, I have to gear down due to EGT, not loss of power power.

Would I run the screw on the boost elbow in or out to increase the boost, or will it even effect the boost? I am thinking in to increase boost.

I think I am OK with the spooling, but need more RPM when climbing. Cruising on the HWY, I have no problem. With a full acceleration, EGT climbs real quick.

On a flat HWY, with my Truck Camper loaded (total weight 10,400 lbs. ), cruise control set at 60 MPH and the outside temp at 50-degrees, I had the following:

US Gear trans in direct (3. 54); RPM 1500, boost 5-psi, and EGT 750.

US Gear trans in under (4. 10 about); RPM 1920, boost 8-psi, and EGT 700.

As a side note, I run this exact HWY (about 260-miles) every week, and have for four years. Sometimes I put a few extra miles on in a week, not often. I run the 3. 54 gears, usually at 70 MPH (sometimes at 75), fuel at the same station, have speedo GPS calibrated, and check the MPG each fill-up (same station). The MPG did not change . 5 MPG running at 60 MPH (130 miles), compared to 70 MPG (130 miles). I fill to the top (no bubbles) and calculate manually. I found that interesting.

Does everyone agree with WDimig on a guestimate on my HP?

i think i had misread your initial post, if your looking to get a turbo of the htb2 (s300) variety, i would reccomend the 62/12, it is very responsive, and will keep you egt's in check for the setup you have right now, i may have been a bit high on your HP #'s, but i would venture to say that if you were to upgrade to a 62/12 turbo, and a 3 piecie exhaust manifold, you wont be too far off those numbers then.

I am hoping to retain the 3-inch down pipe. Second choice would be to use the 4-inch down pipe to my remote 3-inch exhaust brake, with my 4-inch from there out the back.

If you have to stay with the 3" Look into a HTT 60mm/14 conversion. It is an HX35 with a 60mm(HX40 wheel) and then has a 14 cm wastegated housing.

zstroken - Thanks for the suggestion. I am leaning that way.

You say you are still waiting a response from them. Have you ever done business with D-TECH before, or know someone who has? The exhaust manifold appears to be a good price.

i def. agree i currently run the 90HP DDP and 6 plate tst, arc flow, stock charger... at 42psi. 4000 gov spring kit is amazing on the towing end. . you have the perfect setup so far but 370's have got to go. . DDP bang for the buck low egt's, no hazing, better mpg. . get back to me on this topic i'd like to hear your thoughts

thanks red dog

I can't speak for single turbos, but I am running their twins right now, and it uses their turbo as the top one and their manifold. It's been a great setup. I have no complaints, and I beat the tar out of my truck.

TLe - Thanks for the reply. Did the manifold fit properly, and was it painted? Would you buy from them again?

reddog im running the stock charger right now... sounds dumb but hey, ive been thinking about a 62/12 phat shaft?... what you guys think

I must admit, I expected a lot more input. I really appreciate the responses I received, but I expected more.

I, for one, do not think a stock turbo is dumb at all. I think it is a matter of what you want to do. If I pay attention as to where my right foot is, my stock turbo does OK. I cannot use all of my power, but not to the degree I have to hang my head in shame. With my truck empty (6200 lbs), using a stop watch, I can do zero to 60-MPH in seven to eight seconds.

I have a couple of bucks to spend on my truck, and can afford a new turbo. My turbo has over 230,00 miles on it, and I could do with a little less smoke in the winter months, when I am loaded with my truck camper (10,400 total).

I hopped for several suggestions on perhaps the HTT H-CHARGER 60/14W Stage III quickspool hybrid HX35/40W HOLSET TURBOCHARGER 325-415 HP 60mm compressor, 14 waste gated turbine housing. Or maybe the 60/12.

I expect to have my 3-inch exhaust brake as a limiter on turbo size. That does not mean I cannot go bigger, I just do not know what the consequences would be. I will call a vender and see what they suggest.

I really hopped Joseph D. would have chimed in. I have a lot of respect for his knowledge and experience.

turbo opinion..

ok reddog heres what info ive got in local area in indy. . i know of 2 of us 12 valve cranked up guys. . me, and a 5 speed. . with stock turbo and they run like a scoldeddog haha then theres my friend w/ a 24 valve and hes upgrading his 64/14 to a different housing and possible getting another, that is on a 470hp / 968 ft lb truck. soooo ive asked my go to guy that has a good 1000hp 12 valve so he's tried em all!!! hah and he states says for mine he would recommend the 62/12 phatshaft for excellent streetability and to spank a mustang or 2 lol. then theres the high tech turbo and thats a62/12 and there more money but both the basic same. . ive seen boooth with replaceable housings and spools annd exaughst outlets. . you can differ your turbo as you go. . GROW with you TURBO they say. . lets keep searchin and find some more basics out, im right with ya on the money to get one but would it hurt me. . probly not it smokes up to 70 mph!? what the hellll, but its cool.
