C3 I feel you pain! You don't hate electronics - you hate the shoddy cr@p that populates the electronics industry today. You'd love it if everybody marketed their stuff on thick glass epoxy circuit boards and built to military specs (they specs they used to use). I've got electronics my father built in the 1970's and before that still works perfectly. Now suddenly your truck accessories are supposed to be 'disposable?!!' what's up with that?!! The industry needs to remember how to do it right, not cheap. Oh Yeah, also drop it from the 4' high bed of a truck at 40 mph (this was an actual test) if it still works - you can market it! Son of a milspec'd engineer. Gotta go - think my cell phone just let its smoke out!!! ;-)

Just like it has been said this KID is blowing off steam and trying to get crap started. Fine just like I put in another post of yours keep your older truck and MAYBE you will have better luck than those of us with new trucks. NO ONE KNOWS. But the statement about my truck will run and yours won't if we get nuked is total BS. For 1) If you get nailed you ain't going anywhere to start with 2) Say it hits the other side of the country you act like the new trucks are attached to a computer through a satellite or something that will get fried and our trucks won't run. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Just get a d*** horse and get over it.

We are all here because we LOVE the trucks we have, be it auto. or man. or 12v or 24v, or 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen. it doesn't make a bit of difference we are all going to have problems sooner or later.

If you are this passionate about it, you are only 18, go back to school and get a degree that has to do with diesel technology. That way you can come here and inform us on technical issues and not bad mouth everything.

Oh and i dont know what you have against me but I just feel that the electronics on diesel vehicles are not up to par reliablity wise and I have had to deal with it, getting stranded once because of a damn computer. And all these guys are trying to say electronics are more reliable than mechanical injection and its just not true at the moment.

I have nothing against you at all. I am just saying that when you post things like this all it does is create a lot of unnecessary turmoil. I thought the point of this site was to help each other and not bad mouth what each of us may or may not have, and to be quite honest I am pretty sure I would not want to hear tech. advice from someone who wants to down everything, especially when that person does not have what he is downing.

I have had a 24 valve and got stranded because of its electronics :(

My 12V has left me stranded twice, and my 24V, uhm never, and that's the truth 100%.

So what were you saying again?

I have a landcruiser that I switch to electronic ignition. My old point distributor had bit the big one. I don't know why I babied that thing along as long as I did. The electronic ignition is so much more RELIABLE, and from a wrenchers persepective didn't need to be messed with all the time. I love my cruiser, I can fix that thing on the fly and generally just need a few tools. I use this as my hunting rig and play machine. It's very old, and rudimentary, but it always needs TLC. I'm always fixing something on that old rig. Upgrading to electronic ignition is the best ting I've done for it yet.

Ok, that's a gasser different story. I you honestly going to tell me that mechinical injection pumps don't fail? I've done it twice... how do you think injection pump shops stay in business?

Ok I agree that Electronic fuel injection and electronic spark controll on gas engines has been the best thing since sliced bread, however, which is more likley to fail... A P7100 or the piece of crap VP-44?????????????

The P7100 of course. Mine failed on my 12V and left me stranded but my VP44 is still running strong.

It also came with enough valves. :-laf

we all know that the vp isnt as reliable as a P pump... . granted that CUMMINS has to improve with the time and a P pump though reliable is outdated and might not past strict epa standards of today. So far the common rail fuel system just might surpass the p-pump..... were seeing 700+ with a few mods to the truck.

Electronics on a diesel... . your ecm is electronic. Take that off and drive your rig if you hate electronics.

btw Partsman has the "no box, no bottle, just balls and throttle" but youve got a close copy... .

I took delivery on 8/15/01 and am still on my original lift pump (16+ PSIG at idle, 11 PSIG at WOT) and VP44. I certainly hope no one tells my truck how unreliable it's supposed to be! :-laf

Some of this mechanical/electronic stuff is difficult to predict. I spent most of yesterday replacing the VP-44 on my truck - the first major repair since I bought the truck - but a big one!

My brother in law had a '94 truck, with the revered P7100 - nice truck - but he had to be towed in several times...

Apparently, he's not alone:

Not the P7100 for my B/L, but mechanical LP problem the shop never could trace down - so he had them install an electric pusher pump, and the problem was solved.

By the way, I see no problem, or reason for upset over this subject - there are good points on both sides - and some newer guys, or those considering buying a used truck may well have their decision helped by what they read here - some DO value the relative reliability of the purely mechanical stuff over the later electronics - why deprive them of related info because SOME of us have a different opinion?

SO, all that said, and after swapping out my own VP-44, what do *I* think of electronic controls?

Wouldn't go back to mechanical if you paid me, even if I have to do this all over again in another 40K or 4 years... ;) :-laf

And the FIRST thing I did on the new VP, was tap that wire for the Comp! ;)
