In another thread someone has said that the factory programs the oil pressure gauge to read 40 when it's zero.

How about a service bulletin that says to reflash to "zero = 40 psi" when customer complains about low oil pressure?

Can anyone verify, confirm or deny this tidbit of "cummins urban legend"?

If it is done as a reflash, JUST SAY NO!!

If there is any truth I think an oil pressure gauge will be sitting next to the fuel pressure gauge.

There was a reflash for trucks that were brought in for low oil pressure. The flash sets the gauge to read 40psi. Your truck won't have this problem if it wasn't flashed for it. I don't believe any trucks came from the factory like this, it was done by the dealer as a TSB repair.

And if it's a reflash, you'll get stuck with the "feature" if you get your ECM reflashed for any other reason, I'll bet.

When I put my gauges in a few months ago, I added a 100psi oil pressure gauge. It proves that the dash gauge lies through it's teeth. The gauge I added shows pressure in operation from 40 to 85 psi, while the dash gauge is fixed at 60.

If I ever run across the D/C exec who signed off on the firmware fix, there will be blood spilled.

I have a mechanical gauge too, and see pressures from 35 to 90 psi. The facotry guage really does nothing while my mechanical is accurately moving all over the place as the truck starts and warms up.

It's not a myth...

Cyborg, it's true and it blows. I had my truck in under warranty when the guage went to zero, back in 2001. I wasn't aware of the reflash and the sevice hack didn't mention it. I figured all it needed was a sender, which the hack agreed, but they reflashed it and didn't tell me. :(
