Hello Everyone!! New Member here!! First time poster. I have to say this is a high quality site and TDR is AWESOME!!!!

Had the P0514 Batt Temp sensor code go off for the 4th time since new (Jan. 05). First time after a week old. Cleaned and code cleared. 2nd time after 2 weeks old. Sensor replaced. No problems until this week. Code again on Tuesday. Tightened batt post clamps - code cleared. Code again yesterday. Dealer calls STAR and answer given was... ... ... ... ...

No fix on this problem. We're working on it. Dealer apologizes for this problem and says all I can do is drive with Check engine light ON!!!! They claim there is NOTHING wrong with truck.

What is the purpose of the Check engine light then?????

I am NOT comfortable driving with light on. What happens if something really IS wrong and I would NOT know as light will always be on???

Is there going to be a fix for this problem???

Can I clear codes myself? ObviouslyI would check codes first and if only the 0514 I would clear. This would save me a trip to dealer everytime I want code cleared.

Sorry for the first postr Ramble!!

First and formost... Welcome to the TDR!! If it's any consolation, most Autozone stores can check and clear any codes your truck may have, as for D/C and Star well... ... ... ... . :(

What year is your truck? If 04 or 05 you should be able to read the code on the cluster. If it is the P0514, just ignore it and keep driving. This has been a problem (not really a problem though) for a couple of years. The ECM looks at coolant, battery, and intake air temp on a cold start. If they are not within a few degrees of each other the light goes on. Seems the most common cause is cold temps overnight with the truck sitting in the sun in the AM. Battery and intake temp come up faster than the coolant so the light comes on.

CNavvaro - relax! This code is not a problem at all, and STAR actually gave you good advice. The MIL will extinguish itself within a few startups, then everything will be okay.

Listen to what sag2 says - he knows his stuff.

To check your own codes, cycle the ignition key from OFF to RUN (don't start vehicle) 3 times, leaving it on RUN the third time. Odometer will display the codes.

mine went off on monday took to dealer he tells me it might have to do with cold air intake he told me put back stock air cleaner for winter . the only good thing when i brought it to dealer he cleared code and turned on daytime running lights

Ok, I have not seen this one yet. He turned on daytime running lights? What lights come on for the DRL's? Do the 06's have them on by default?

Sure wish we could get a real ODBC setup for the Dodge like VAG-Com is for the VW's. I can go in and change any option on the VW I want!

I got this code, but no MIL, yesterday morning for the 1st time since new (60k now). I didn't have the truck plugged in, but I had the full grill cover on. This morning the code wasn't there anymore, but I only started and drove the truck 3-4 time between days. I thought for the code to disappear one had to go through 40-50 cycles to full operating temp... ??

DRL - have your dealer change the county code to Canada and you have daytime running lights they are your headlights at 40% power. If you have your parking brake on they do not work (strange???) but drove me and the dealer sort of crazy. Merry Christmas to all!

Do not change country code it may change things you are not going to notice right away. The drl can be turned on by itself ;)

I see that code a lot this time of year, the ambient temp sensor will drop rapidly in cold temps the engine coolant does not. This will trip the light. You can see all the parameters in the freeze frame data when the code was set.

I had this same problem about two months after I got my truck. The batt temp sensor was bad on mine. Does anyone know why it's even important to have a battery temp sensor?

When batteries start to go bad they have internal "short-circuits" which create excessive resistance and they will overheat when charging.

Ever had a bad cell-phone battery that got real hot when charging?

It is used for fine tunning the charging system for different underhood temps

Gee Bob,

I did this six months ago, could you tell what I should expect? BTW so far so good.

It varies by model it may be a suttle change in yours, some models/years will do strange things including changing alarm features

cnavarro,

most auto parts stores carry OBD check tools. Get one that allows you to erase the codes that are set. On some cars like VW leaving the gas cap loose can set a code, $90 later at the dealer the code is erased. One time and it almost pays for the tool.

My 2006 popped this code today. About 30 degrees out and had the block heater plugged in. I suspect that's the cause... . warm coolant and cold battery. Apparently D/C doesn't care to fix this issue. Just going to ignore it but I sure hate a big yellow "Check Engine" symbol on my dash on a brand new, 1050 miles, $50/k truck!

Also, it did pop a P0111 (as I recall) a few days ago. This is a intake temp sensor error- I attribute this to the AFE Stage II though. Could be wrong????

had same prob with customers truck today, went through diag in book sensor and wiring all ok called star hotline said need ecu, patched me thorough to cummins and said glitch in software. flashed ecu with starscan and light did not come back on yet, cummins techs working on new flash ,will be out in a month or so as per vern at cummins
