Steering Gear Replacement

I have ban 2006 2500 series 4x4 with the Death Wobble problem. Replaced the ball joints and steering damper. Problem still there. Anyone tried lukes links?

I had the death wobble. Did the Carli joints, DSS and thought I had it fixed but it returned. I had the Mopar steering upgrade installed and I am confident now that the death wobble is gone. It also improved the steering a lot.

Did you replace the track bar bushings? Luke's Link urethane bushings are a very good upgrade for not a lot of money. The track bar is a major component when there is loose front end issues.

I had the dreaded DW for 3 years, 8 balljoints and a bunch of $$$. One of the biggest cause is the wrong rated tires. I had no problem until i used D rated tires. Once the wobble starts, it will worsen and wear out all the components. The only fix for me was the Carli upper and lower BJoints. Moog... NO, Dodge parts NO, even a Carli track bar didnt do it.

I still have the D rated tires, (almost bald Finally) and i can feel the tires shaking but the Ball joints are holding up. Seems all trucks have thier own issues but tires will get it started. Les Swab tires now has a 17' "E" rated all terrain tire just for that reason. Some will shake with the stock E tires, maybe it's due to the poor design of the stock Joints and premature wear. Again, so many causes... ... . Good luck

I've never had a "death wobble" or whatever it's called, but I did replace slightly worn BJs with Carli uppers and lowers at 101,000 miles. Now the truck has what I call "memory steer," which means the steering doesn't return to center at lower speeds.

In other words, the truck "hunts," or wants to keep turning in one direction or the other. Not a happy situation. If I'm not paying strict attention the truck could very quickly be in the ditch or over the center line. I emailed Carli over a month ago and have yet to hear back from them. The front end of the truck is very tight and I'm pleased with that, but it would be nice to know the "hunting" would go away.

I'm with the tire crowd. Had 37" BFG A/T's (D rated) with terrible death wobble. Went to 35" Toyo Open Country M/T's (E rated). No more DW.

I had the DW in my 2003. It took about 10 new ball joints and finially (just AFTER warranty was up), found the issue. They have re-engineered the steering components. $1200 later, it is gone and has never returned.

I actually received a re-call on my 2006 3500 for a steering problem. When I took it in they looked under the truck and said it had the right linkages and there wouldn't be a problem.

Anybody got an idea if I can replace the OEM track bar bushings with Luke's Link bushings on the ground - - any suggestions or hints would be welcome - - - this is gonna' be one old man doin' it all - - -

You should be OK. It is more difficult to hook the track bar back up after a leveling kit job when the differential is up in the air than to just do the Luke's Links. I remember having to do some alignment jockying to get the second bolt in. I did mine on a gently sloped gravel driveway. If you have a concrete pad, you should be good. The toughest thing could be removing the old rubber/steel sleeve bushings. I have a 12 ton "H" press. Putting the new bushings back in is the easy part.

When reinstalling the track bar if there is any misalignment of the bolt holes turning the steering wheel one way or the other will very effectively move the whole truck frame and body back and forth allowing easy installation of the bolt. If you have an assistant to turn the steering wheel that is best or it can be done solo from underneath the truck with the engine running if you're daring enough.

Do not wait for it to get worse. Pull the tie rod end off at the pitman arm. Disconnect the steering stabilizer and while the tires are off the ground be sure you have no binding, odds are good it is the steering gear but get it fixed.

Sorry to be a month late replying to this, Bob4x4, I just noticed your response. Steering gear, huh? I appreciate the tip. Since I have 19. 5" wheels, I never knew whether the "hunting" had to do with the new BJs or whether it was the wheels and tires. I did run off the road slightly the other day and almost lost it when I pulled back onto the highway. I'll have my suspension shop check this. Thanks again!

:-laf No there is not a recall to fix death wobble

yup no recall only a tsb, dealers pretend to not know about this. . and if you have ANY aftermarket front end parts, they will blame the mods for your DW. anything to pass the buck! dealers suck! I put the parts in to make a crappy front end better! and they don't want to know you! and i'm i'm still rebuilding a 2006 front end with 52000 miles on it because it wasn't built right in the first place!
