It is likely an optical illusion if you are going by the def gauge which is non-linear in the way it moves from full to empty. You likely didn't get gauge movement until the tank was drained down to 3/5 tank or just above a half tank while towing. But just because the gauge didn't move, didn't mean you weren't using def. That is likely the towing part of your journey. Then after you dropped your trailer. The def tank level was lower and you saw gauge movement?

Maybe I am wrong, but that is what many report.

Maybe its just an optical illusion then.
From SW Idaho to Brookings Oregon earlier this month, about 640 miles, I noticed that it took
less than 1/2 tank to the coast and then driving up and down the coast for a week, about 300 miles without towing, drank about a 1/4 of tank. The big difference is the towing speed was generally 65 for most of the travel across southern Oregon except the last area from rt 140 Klamath Falls to Rt 199 to the 101 was slower like 45 to 50. Travel around town was rarely above 55.
I added 2.5 gallons of blue DEF in Brookings and the tank was around 3/4 tank maybe a little more but definetly not full. In my driveway after the trip, it has one tick mark more than 1/2 a tank of DEF. I noticed a regen on the way back to Idaho according to the CTS 3. EGT temps were almost always between 700 to 900+ towing depending on the mountain we were going over. Averaged about 9mpg. the travel trailer weight scaled at 8350.

The tank won't change the level until you use about 2 gallons of DEF, so it makes the top 1/4 MUCH bigger than the bottom 1/4.

If you really want to know your DEF economy use a pump at a truck stop.

I think thats what I was seeing, the drop in tank volume after the towing day ended.
I'll keep an eye on it, I have another trip to northern Idaho coming up at the end of Sept.
Thanks for the replies.

Sometimes, there aren't any pumps available such as almost any station south of Miami FL to the Keys and within 80 (curvy) miles from the souternmost coast of Oregon, but there are at least 3 where I live. Thanks for the suggestion.

Maverick in Holbrook (I 40 influence) has gas at $3.15, diesel is $4.46...28 miles south, we are 3.67 and 4.71, grrrr.
