Many new vehicles with sticks have a feature hill assistso you don't need 3 feet ...........
Wow Bob thats just plan lazy LMAO I remember riding a 1949 pan harley with suicide shift no front brake in San Diego Hills coming to a stop light on a hill now that was tricky.... I finally rigged a brake lever to the rear brake pedal to be able to hold the bike on a hill
But I guess some drivers need all the help they can get

That "app" would take away from the "interactive experience". :p

Besides, while helpful, that's only a small part of the annoyance equation.

So Bob does that mean my 2016 auto trans hill start assist does not work. I see it in the menu, turn it on, but see no difference when stopped on a hill.

My 14 Durango has hill assist. It'll hold the brakes for like 2 seconds so you won't roll back then it'll let go. It will let you roll back eventually.

Driving "should" be what each individual wants it to be. I want an automatic.....but I still learned on a standard.

Nothing worse than having a standard trans, on a grade, in bumper to bumper traffic on snow packed roads.
Some people do not get any kind of pleasure out of manually shifting gears...even those that know how to do it.

You'll just have to accept the fact that some people do not like what you like.

1) Driving should NOT be what each individual wants it to be, it should be a very specific skill that one must master before contaminating the roads I have to share with them with their inadequacies . I am a career driver with over a million documented safe miles - that statement is like saying "surgery should be what one wants it to be" I'm being forced to have an automatic if I purchase from certain manufacturers and that's NOT what I want it to be - would you like to be forced to have someone or something you don't like to perform surgery on you?

2) I love having a manual on a hill, in traffic, in the snow and the ability to control the power I transfer to the drive tires, when i actually shift to the next gear, being able to "Rock" out of a ditch that i got stuck in because someone who was driving the way they wanted too got in my way or spun out with their inexperience and inability

3) I accept the fact that people do not like what I like every day when I share an 8 lane highway with some of the most stupid people i have ever seen who somehow have managed to pass a drivers test, start a motor vehicle and then somehow manage to make it move, then place the transmission into "Drive" and proceed to attempt drive "The way they want" What I don't accept is that MY choice to drive the way I want to is being taken away and I should't be forced to purchase the "Heavy Duty" optional automatic transmission for thousands of extra dollars when I want to shift. GM & Ford don't even offer a manual anymore and why do I need to get the Allison or Asin transmission to be able to handle the HP and Torque of their Diesel offerings? Why is there now an "Automatic" restriction on CDL licenses - oh right because the next generation of drivers can only drive a computer controlled automatic shifting vehicle. Just like the 2nd amendment, I have rights to bear a clutch should I choose so you must accept the fact that I do not like what you like!

I had an Indian also with suicide shift and upgraded the front wheel with a brake not only to help with overall stopping but also starting on hills since I was only born with 2 feet.

as far as a truck goes, where are these hills that people need "hill assist" on? must be near vertical?? it only takes a milisecond to move your right foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal all while the left foot slowly comes off the floor - rocket science for some im sure

Can't wait to see what happens when Harley, Indian, Victory, etc all remove the manual shifting and install automatics or CVT transmissions in all motorcycles. God forbid one has to actually pay attention to that dreaded shifting while riding or driving.

Even my motorcycles will never have a auto anything for driving it
I've held a CDL licence for 50 years and I was a appalled the first time I seen a big rig with an auto transmission first thought that came to mind was it must be a midget woman driver nope big ol burly guy driving it
Yes I've owned auto transmission vehicles but prefer to manually shift my vehicle sure sometimes I come to a stop light and forget its still in 5th gear then I do the quick grind gears into 1st gear trick ... The one saving grace is because I'm very old I will never live to see the day when there are no more manual transmissions for people like me to drive
( your a die hard when you drive a manual trans with a buger in one hand and a coke in the other and a larger order of frys between your legs then take off from a stop lite) LMAO

I don't care about manual vs automatic. I care about good drivers. I have seen my share of crappy manual shift drivers too.

The right tool for the job. City busses & trash trucks have been autos for a long time.
Dump trucks & over the road rigs are manual. Fine with me.

You might not like the cost of a capable auto for a high torque engine but perhaps you would also not like the cost of a manual sized for the modern diesel. Ram has a manual but they have to derate the engine so it doesn't destroy the clutch/transmission.

I used to have a manual in my daily driver but I got sick of it in stop and go city traffic.
I am happy to have an auto these days. Yes, my motorcycles are manual and that is fine until a traffic jam reminds me of why I like my daily ride.

I'm afraid there's a much bigger threat for the next generation of drivers. It's autonomous mobility. They will loose their freedom altogether.

I think you missed the point there. I am speaking specifically to transmission choice. Tell me, how is it safer for all drivers to be forced to drive manuals? Your analogy does not make sense.

Congratulations, but why do you think everyone else should be forced to use the transmission you like?

3) I accept the fact that people do not like what I like every day
Actually, it doesn't sound like you do at all.
.....when I share an 8 lane highway with some of the most stupid people i have ever seen who somehow have managed to pass a drivers test, start a motor vehicle and then somehow manage to make it move, then place the transmission into "Drive" and proceed to attempt drive "The way they want"

and you think that by forcing these people to drive manual transmissions the highway will somehow be safer?

Just like the 2nd amendment, I have rights to bear a clutch should I choose

Please show us in the Bill of Rights where it states you have the right to a standard transmission?

so you must accept the fact that I do not like what you like!

I'm not the one who feels the need to tell everyone else they should do what I do.

I get it! I had a DEF issue because I don't have a clutch.

How in the world did this get so far off topic.

Could we drop this whole transmission discussion or put it in a different thread?

Thanks
