This is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway.

Toward the end of summer, my a/c wasn't blowing cold. But, I decided to wait until next year to have it serviced.

Here is my question. It's my understanding that the a/c is actually running when I run the defroster. If the a/c is empty, will that damage my a/c system ?

Thanks,

TRat

Yes, the A/C runs with defrost. No, it won't damage the A/C system. The A/C system has a low pressure switch that will prevent the compressor from running without refrigerant.

Along with freon they add oil. the reason to run the compressor is to dry the air (defrost works better) however the seals need to be lubed often. Rembember john q public doesn't do anything but drive. I run my ac once a month on cars I store over winter. I guess you could pull the relay... . If the system gets to low, it won't run.

You should buy a kit at wal mart $30 and add some until you can get the leak fixed. They also sell dye (seen with a black light).

Without the A/C the defroster will blow wet air, your windows will fog up a lot more than you expect. Cool humid days and you wont be able to see out through the steamed up windows.
