All of this for a windshield wiper motor :D. We need a thread on vehicle electrical so we can re-learn what we have forgot over the years :D

^^^^ Another good reason for the deletion of the Alternators vs. Generators segment of Playin' With Electrons. Unlike Florida's Playin' With Elections...
oops, wrong forum...OK. I'll clam up...:rolleyes::p:D

IIRC, a generator is essentially a DC motor. When driven by the shaft, it generates DC current/voltage. When fed DC current/voltage, it turns the shaft.

Dave and PBJ, Ditto!
Bit of an update. Since it's cold and I have no warm place to work on truck I figured I'd swing by the local parts chain and have them do one of "their" tests on the alternator. Results: Alternator is good (I think volts were 14.7 but I didn't write it down = D'Oh!), diodes tested good too. Had them check batteries as well -> Pass side - passed = fully charged and good 12.7v, driver side - failed = fully charged and bad 12.2v (once again I forget actual volts displayed for both batteries). I don't have much faith in the guy who tested and the actual connections from the equipment used as the clamps didn't want to make good contact = I pressed them outward to try to make better connections on battery terminals. When the alternator was tested it was with test device connected to pass side battery terminals, engine idling and no lights on (just left fan and radio on as when I first shut down). Friday I'm going to a friends shop who has up to date test equipment (OBD III, and etc. devices) and I'll see if he can confirm parts chain store results. BTW: truck never fails to start or need a jump to do so... More to come.

The battery testing bad as you know will draw down the good battery. Not that I do not trust the shop but I would get the batteries fixed and still do the AC ripple test to confirm the results. It is an easy test and will at least confirm the alternator is not causing problems.

This is a very handy tester and will let you know if you have a failing battery and for $50.00 is worth every penny.

I can confirm through experience that one bad battery can cause all kinds of subtle electrical gremlins to pop up...You don't have to get them wet or feed them after midnight either...Yet the truck may start every time. Get new batteries and your truck may get a little more perky on startup and behave a little better..

I just checked the receipts from the purchase of my last 2 batteries = 11/6/2012. I'll get new ones this weekend...

Especially with what took place today. I took a 250 mile round trip (Levittown, PA to Pittston, PA) to visit a friend's new business traveling via the PA Tpk. About 80 miles into the trip I was passing (I'm doing about 75 in a 70 zone) 3 white newer Fords following each other all with the same logo on the side, all occupants were dressed in bright yellow shirts and as I came up to the lead truck the guy increases his speed so I couldn't pass, I hate that BS. I set the Edge to kill (5/5) and eased into it pulling about 50' in front of him staying in my (left) lane, backed out of it till the boost went down then laid into it to "smoke him" and put some distance between us. As I approached 90 or so I noticed there was a slight bucking (hard to explain) I stayed into it till around 100 and pulled into the right lane. Obviously, the lead dork was about a ½ mile back and stayed there. I resumed my 75 mph and as I was coming up on a slow tractor trailer I planned on passing I looked in my mirror noticing dork boy was trying to catch up to me and lock me in behind the tractor (yeah a real butt wipe), I had plenty of time to signal and move into the passing lane and gradually lay into the go pedal to smoke dork boy again, guess he likes it??? Anyhow, I saw a rest stop coming up in a mile so I decided to pull in. I parked and was letting the EGTs drop to 300* before shut down and noticed the check engine light (CEL) UGH! I shut down and went in. 15 mins later or so I start up and the CEL was still present, everything was well and she ran perfect the remainder of my trip to my friend's new business. I spent about 6 hours with my friend and around 2PM hit the road home, CEL still there, still running fine. I stopped about 70 miles from home and when I got back on the road noticed the CEL was gone. Got home, read codes, there were 2, both were P0253 which the code reader described as "Injection Pump Metering Control Low A". There are many threads on codes and some specific to this P0253 with many variances on "what it is/could be". I decided to try my luck and sent Cummins an email request for their thoughts. I'll await their reply within 24 hours, of course I won't be holding my breath... My VP is approaching 10 years old and has been "tapped" via a stealth cover since initial install. I'll check for chaffed wires, read the APPS, adjust if needed, but I'm sure I enclosed the tap wire in plastic loom, we'll see...

I had that code a few times with a slight miss every once in a while. Turned out to be the fueling box. At that time it was a UDDFM which was an Edge with a special tune. I sent it in they replaced and code with miss never happened again. While coming back from Minot the truck acted like the ignition was flipped every once in a while and eventually was very low on power. Bought a new edge comp, problems solved.

Joe,
Woo-Hoo! :D:D While reading your post my brain somehow threw in an energetic musical accompaniment of Deep Purple's Highway Star to the mental visualization of the Ford scene. What a ride!!! :cool::)

Bruce, that's a good old one, "No body gonna steel my car I'm gonna race it to the ground-hound, no body gonna beat my car I'm gonna break the speed of sou-hound".

Dave, I'll have to reach out to Edge. Thing is it only happens when I'm on an extended acceleration and the Edge doesn't have to be on kill. I usually run on 1/1 or 1/2.

Brief update. In post 37 I mentioned replacing relay for wipers. Well they still do the same thing. Installed 2 new batteries, WallMart Max Group 27’s with 810 CCA, my 3rd set of these BTW, $119 and change each. I’ve been getting about 6+ years on these Maxx batteries I’d recommend them to anyone. Could have gotten cheaper ($100.51 ea.) at Sam’s Club but when I got there the batteries were Duracell and only 3 year & 720 CCA... L8r

19 years of Pa. weather I think I would opt for a new motor as I am sure your original has been worked to death. I lived there for 18 years so unless things changed drastically towards drier weather you pretty much got your money's worth out of that one. Now if you cannot find a new one that's a different story, I would not throw the original or core charge it. Keep it and take it apart. Some of this new replacement parts aren't so good at times.

“New” Motor (= not rebuilt) arrived yesterday while I was out of town. Raining on way home today, of course not heavy enough to leave wipers on low speed, what a PIA having to turn wipers on then off (just at the right time) so they would park. Regardless of weather I’m installing tomorrow, heading out of town again next week... will update after a few days. Keep your fingers, toes (and other appendages- LOL) crossed for me. L8r

I'll put in a request to the Big Guy in the sky to hold off on the refrigerated atmospheric moisture for you. Good luck! ;):D
