They way I read Steve's article the EGR will not be introduced until Mid 04 " 2004. 5 model". If this is true it will fit my plans perfectly. My 2000 should have a quarter million miles on it by the time the deliver my new 3500 single wheel in the fall of 2003. This gives them a year to de bug and I still do not have to have the EGR system. Is there any up side to the EGR system. IE mileage/ performance or is it all about the tree huggers.

Shoot for 2004

I think the ideal thing to do would be to wait for the 2004s to roll out. Get the first year's bugs out of the way, and grab one before they start adding the EGR. The poor folks in California are screwed though 'cause I think they'll get EGR right off the bat :(

California won't get EGR until '04. 5 too, but they have to deal with only 235 hp until then - after that they'll have the same power as the other 49, but with the EGR :( .

I would be willing to bet that the delay has much to do with the availability of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel. This stuff should be more generally available by 2004 and will be the only fuel sold by 2007. We should take a lesson from the TDI crowd who have had to deal with EGR for years. Don't run an engine with EGR on stardard 500 ppm sulfur diesel. Many TDIs have had soot clogged intake manifolds after only 40-50,000 miles. The increased soot load in the oil will also be a factor, although the CI-4 rated oils are supposed to handle that. I really doubt an oil will hold up for 15,000 miles in a Cummins with present day fuel and EGR.

California 235HP

The CA issue should be easy to solve. Go to a neighboring state and buy the real deal (305/555). then license in CA and get an exemption. Wouldn't this work? If I had a 2003 Cummins and moved into CA (God forbid), they couldn't refuse to title my vehicle - could they?

Steve

Good question Steve- I'm looking in to that right now. Or maybe I should move out of state:rolleyes:?? That would be better!:D

When I was in California the only way you could do that would be for someone else to buy it new, register it in their state and then you buy it from them used and register it in California. I knew quite a few people that did that with motorcycles that weren't available in California. But you'll be paying sales tax twice, registration twice, and you'll be buying a "used" truck so if you want to finance it your finance rates will be higher (most banks charge higher rates for used vehicles than new).
