Valley Fuel Injection, Woodland, CA??

great editorial on the US, trucks, fuel, diesels...

Here's the story..... A friend of mine drives over the road. He was running along and heard a noise like a bunch of marbles in a coffee can as well as a bad miss. He pulled over ASAP and had it towed. The dealer told him a valve head broke off and has ruined that cylinder. They are recommending an in chassis overhaul. He's going to have it towed back here to MN by a friend of his. I told him I'd do the work if I can get a puller for a reasonable price. I may even build one if I need to.

Anyone done one? I'm sure I have all the tools, except that one... . the cylinder sleeve puller. Do I need one? Where could I purchase one? How hard would it be to make?

I'd like to help him out, as well as make a bit of money... but if I can't do it... I can't do it...

Thanx guys!

Couple of things,

What sort of detroit are we talking about? Series 60? If so, It is not to bad a job. Series 60's have an overhead cam, but the cam is held in place by removable saddles, so you can lift the cam straight up.

Also, The niftiest Liner removers I have seen(read:CHEAP) are

1) a plate of steel cut to fit the bottom of the liner, an oak 2x2, & a floor jack. (may not work so well under the front axle)

2) Run the piston to BDC, put a Bead of weld around the inside of the liner, halfway down, & put a big breaker bar on the crankshaft. the piston will shove the liner right out. Probably kinda hard on the piston, but you are going to replace them anyway... ... ... ...

If you are talking about a 2-stroke detroit, then things get more interesting... ..... P.

Sorry... Yes I believe it's a Series 60.

The Weld idea sounds promising.

I'll just have to pick up some flux core wire or a tank for my welder.

a liner puller is easy to make. . once the seat breaks free, you can pull it easially... get some C channel that is wide enough to go across the top of the liner [2"x6" might do it] get a piece of 1/2" plate 2" wide cut and ground down to fit just inside the liner at the bottom, but still have lips that grab the bottom edges of the liner, then bore a hole through the center of it and put a long bolt through it and up through a hole in the C channel. put a nut on it and either hammer on it with an impact gun, or spin it out with a wrench. .

Thats' pretty much what I had in mind if I needed to make one!

Sweet... this is gonna be 'easier' than I though!

I've never worked on a 60 series Detroit but the puller made with the plate and channel iron works fine on the old 855cid Cummins engines. Got one in my toolbox i've used several times. The last one I fixed that dropped a valve I just got a piston and liner, rings and bearings for that cylinder and put on an exchange head. I didn't overhaul the whole engine.

How many miles are on the engine? Obviously out of warranty, are we talking 550,000? 700,000?

To slam pistons, liners, and bearings you're probably looking at $3,000 in parts, give or take.

Depending on the mileage you might want to look at heads and injectors, too.

They're easy to work on, just cost $$$. :)

He's got just over a million miles on it.

Since he dropped a valve he needs to have the heads redone or exchanged.

I think he had the injectors done at 700,000.

The Dealer called him and said $14-15,000. He doesn't think the blue book is that much on it. I told him we can do it for probably half that.
