In February, I had DD stage II injectors and a #10 fuel plate installed. Until two weeks ago everything was fine. Very little smoke regardless how hard I got on the accelerator and the EGTs peaked at about 1250 degrees. AFC and fuel plate were both centered. Life was good
. Then a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that my EGT gauge (Di Pricol) didn't come off the peg initially but after tapping it(and removing and reconnecting the inputs at the back of the gauge) the EGT started to work again. It seemed to react a lot more slowly then before and the average readings seemed about 150 degrees lower (now reads about 550 at 65 on the highway, about 200 when idling, and about 350 at 30 around town. I suspect a bad guage and am working to get a warrenty replacement. However, over the last three days, I've noticed a different (unrelated?) problem. When I accelerate from a stop the truck is producing a LOT of BLACK smoke anytime the boost climbs above 5 psi. Further, if I'm cruising down the road while travelling at anywhere from 50 mph to 65 mph and aggressively accelerate (boost between 25 and 30 psi) I leave a continuous black cloud of smoke until I let off the accelerator (I suspect it will also smoke at other speeds but didn't try any other speeds). The only way I can get it to not produce black smoke is to slowly accelerate by keeping the boost below 5 psi until moving at 10 to 15 mph and then slowly increasing the boost as I accelerate further. I blew the dirt from the air filter (with compressed air) but haven't don't anything else since installing the injectors and fuel plate. Next weekend, I intend to check the AFC and fuel plate positions to make sure they didn't work loose, actually clean the air filter, and look a little closer at the connections between the turbo output and the intake manifold (did a quick look today but didn't see any glaring problems).
Any other suggestions of things to check would be appreciated.
