Can anyone recommend a good diagnostic scan tool to buy to read P-codes? Especially the codes stored in the Cummins ECM?

I thought I saw one that Cummins sold; but does anyone know if the generic OBDII tools sold by retailers (like Northern Hydraulics) can read the Cummins ECM?

OBDII codes are OBDII codes - and are not brand specific as far as vehicle make and standards are concerned - so as long as what you buy has the various features you want - freeze-frame and such - it really doesn't much matter where you get one. Just be sure to get connecting cables for the vehicle you plan to use it on - those DO vary by auto brand.

there is a lot that go's with OBDII auto company's dont have a choice.

The EPA has alot to do with the OBDII. Starting in 96 or 97 it was required by the goverment with a set of standards, including the connector, it's location and what code's auto makers had to make available with out the factory scan tool you dont have to worry about diffrent cables or connectors with obdII systems.

Any Generic OBDII scanner will pull codes, it just depends now how much futher you want to go, as far as getting FF data, watching PID's, recording data for live playback, testing systems.

I have an auto xray 6000 scan tool and it will not read any codes on my 02 from the engine ecm. It reads the chassis pcm codes though but I have not updated it in the last year so I do not know if 02 is out of the warranty preiod.
