I am planning on changing my differential fluid and add a mag-hytec cover. I did a search on rear end fluids and all I could find was information on limited slip. My build sheet that I got from the dealer shows my truck having a anti-spin differential. Does anyone know the difference or are they the same. Thanks up front for any help

You can use the same lube but depending on which one you go with you may have to add friction modifier. Most if not all of the Dino oils will require the friction modifier to be added. Many of the synthetics don't seem to need it but can certainly be added if need be. I am using the amsoil series 2000 oil in my diffs and it required no modifier.

Henderson,

Anti-spin and limited slip are used interchangably. You will need a lube with a LS additive in it or puchase the LS additive separately to add if the lube you decide on does not have it.

Ditto what BarryG said

I changed to Amsoil series 2000 75W-140 when I installed the Mag Hytec and did the figure 8 thing and never have needed to add any friction modifier. If you go with regular gear lube and want some friction modifier,I've two bottles of the Mopar stuff I would like to part with cause I don't need it. :)

"The anti-spin rear was available in that year only in a 4:10 ratio, maybe that'll help you figure out what you have. "

What year?

I have checked the manual against my truck and that didn't give any help. The manual said there would be an id tag on the differental. The only tag there said to use limited slip fluid only but didn't id which rear end it was. The manual lists 5 different rear ends that could be installed. I have a 2000 4x4 ext cab with tow package and the build date was 8-99.

The differential cover has this information stamped on it:

DANA

42434

083 8

REV AB

05 02 94

If any has any more information on how to id this rear end let me know.

The build sheet said ratio 3. 55 DANA 80 ANTI-Spin and the same info is inside the glove box. Thanks

Why are you doubting the build sheet and the equipment identification plate in the glove box?

Edit:

Just figured out your concern: you have the 286 RBI rear axle.

"2000 model, Anti-spin rear axle only available from factory in 4. 10 ratio. "

I have a model year 2000 Ram 2500 with the Dana 80 hybrid 3. 54 anti-spin axle—from the factory.

I believe there was misinformation floating around during the abbreviated 2000 model year regarding the availability of 3. 54 gears with the anti-spin. I ordered this combination and have this combination.

Look at the specs for the various rear axles in the factory service manual. The 286 RBI (Dana 80) has an eleven inch diameter ring gear. Others listed have smaller ring gears.

The Dana 80 was used on all 1-ton and all non-automatic-transmission ¾-ton Rams in model year 2000.

More information is available at the Dave Fritz Website.

2002 3500 Dana 80 auto and a factory sway bar

I have a question on the Mag-Hytec cover. I have one to put on next weekend. From the info sheets that come with it, depending on where and how the factpry markings were applied, there could be a sealing problem. How many have had a sealing problem? Is it common?, or just a possibility?

Second question. I have the factory anti sway bar. I got the spacer kit for the sway bar. as far as I can tell from the diagrams, the mounting on the drivers side is already as far to the rear as possible. the furtherest mounting bolt to the back is right under the shock mount. The passenger side can move back and there is a already existing hole for one of the bolts further to the rear of the bracket. It appears that I only need to drill one new hole for the passenger side.

Does that check with anyone else?

Thanks,

Bob Weis

I also have the dana 80 with factory sway bar. The areas for potential leaks are along the sealing surface where they stamp info specific to the gear set-up. A fine flat file to remove any raised areas was all I needed. The sway bar cleared just fine in the stock position. Maybe there's a clearance issue with the dan 70s?

Bob,

I just mixed up a little JB Weld like the instructions said and applied it over the stamped in numbers and letters. Let it set a day, sand smooth with the rest of the surface and there

should be no sealing problems for ya!

The rear sway bar shouldn't be a clearance issue for you if yours is a 4x4. At least that's what I recall. I had no clearance problems whatsoever. Just remove spare when you do the install (makes for more room under there).
