What brand Oil and Filter do you use?

Adding Ball Valve to Bypass Oil Filtration System?

man, what a weekend...

I had bought an sps66 for my last truck and never installed it... decided that with the 35's and heavier truck, I might do better w/ an sps62.

called Shane at II and he hooked me up and got the turbo out to me on Thurs...

realized I didn't have a filter setup so I called Rip and had him send me an AFE Race setup.

Thurs was spent running around getting everything I needed to do the swap... exhaust pieces, etc.

got up bright and early Friday and drove out SM Diesel... got there and Wes and I were talking and I noticed the right front fender well was all wet... took a closer look and noticed that the entire right side of the truck was coated in coolant :( we cracked the radiator cap and it vented a lot of pressure :( head gasket... not the treat I was looking for when I'm 6hrs from home, with a weekend of closed shops bearing down on me, and having to be 2hrs from home in the company van at 8AM monday morning!!!!

called Ray at RAYMAC to see where they were on the head I'd dropped off a while back... he said he wasn't sure what we'd finally decided to do (my flakiness... every time we talked I said something different! LOL!), so they hadn't started, but he had Wes' head almost finished... Wes said his famous three words... "not a problem" and told me to tell Ray to put the rush on it and we'd be there before close to pick it up. We (I say "we"... it was Wes driving me around for 7 hrs!!!) had to run all over and across the metroplex and back to get to his bank, my bank, RAYMAC, etc. Wes' Cummins guy met us in a WalMart parking lot at 8PM with the head gasket set and got back to SM Diesel at 9PM...

The truck fought me at every turn till 4AM Fri night... from 8AM-4AM on Saturday, and it finally relented at about 5PM Sunday. Every time it cornered me, Wes just said "not a problem" and grabbed what I needed off the shelf. I was sunk so many times it's not even funny, and he bailed me out every time!!

by 6PM it was comical when I pulled back into his lot for the 3rd time chasing boost leaks... we got it all sorted out, the drive home was stressful, and I'm still nervous with only 1 retorque on the studs-orings, so I'm just babying it around for a while... the head gasket job is still WAY too fresh on my mind! LOL!

the sps62 sounds INSANE out the tailpipe!!!!! I'm running 5" straight pipe with the last 30" or so of tailpipe 6" diameter... I'm amazed that such a large turbine turns that kind of RPM... it's so much louder than my old HX40 it's amazing. it honest to god sounds like a friggin' 18 wheeler... and the RAYMAC head put a little extra snap in the exhaust note that I've never heard before. I got out of the truck to look for exhaust leaks only to learn that those were just exhaust pulses coming out the tailpipe! :D

I freakin' LOVE this combo, even if I am just putting around w/ it! (ok, I accidently saw 45psi a few times... that boost needle swings QUICK!!!!)

thanks to Shane at II for working with me to get the exact turbo I wanted...

BIG thanks to Ray at RAYMAC for staying late on a Friday to get me rolling

and HUGE thanks to Wes at SM Diesel for turning a real bummer of a Friday into a "not a problem" of a Sunday :D I owe ya a few!!!

Good story, but it sounds like a PITA too! You will learn to love that single more than Twins, I would not go back to Twins as I see it today.

Jim

all I know is the boost starts coming in slightly later than it did with the twins, but it hits way quicker... if I've got 10psi showing on the gauge, 30psi is a touch of the throttle away... w/ the twins, the needle was awfully lazy :(

I love this thing and have zero desire to go back w/ twins... if I towed heavy all the time, the twins would be great.

the eventual plans after a bunch of re-torques and an injector swap is some bottled atmosphere ;)

To each his own Twins verses a Single. I really like mine and I guess it will stay the same except it about to get a ported housing. Maybe some day I'll send it in for the Bullet upgrade. The EGT difference in mine was 100-150 degrees hotter when I dropped the B/B off. Power is down though, I'm going to guess and say 100 hp, that's saying 600 now and 700 with Twins.

Forrest, if you do put a bottle on it YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK, it a different world and you don't need big boost... . 50 is about right!

Yeah, I have a SPS 62/80 with a 5 inch turbo back and canned that 4 to 3 and a half inch elbow for a 600 series elbow and have 6 inch curved stacks. Having a 6 speed, I love the way the dual ported waste gate blows off and the sound goes through the stacks. When I have the TST turned up and SMARTY on the higher settings this thing sounds damn mean... :-laf You think that a single pipe exhaust sounds good, you should hear my two pipes. :D

What kind of twins were you running?

it was a PDR 35-12 on top with an S400 on bottom. it was built with Rip's twins components, and it was top notch, don't get me wrong... I could get 20psi by 1700rpm in 6th, but if I was showing no boost on the gauge, it took forever to get that 20 and more to come in...

now if I'm crusing at 2000rpm and just lay into it, I'd say I see 30psi in half the time or less than I would with the twins...

in a towing situation w/ steady load on the engine, the twins are awesome

and perhaps a "bigger" set of twins would have hit harder, I don't know, but at this point I have no desire to find out... I feel like I've got a great combo, it's super-drivable, makes great power, and if I want/need more, I'll just hit it w/ some drugs

Interesting. I took my SPS62/K31 twins off a couple of weeks ago and tried the SPS as a single. Egt's went up over 300 degrees on a simple go through the gears routine. Glad to see your truck likes the single. It does free up a bit of room.

IMO This is the situation where you are really going to miss them over the SPS62. Let us know how it compares to twins while towing?

Ron, you need to concider Forrests' one of those crazy Texans, he really has no idea what all those gauges are even for... . truck prolly has a pounded out cat on it still :-laf

I dumped my twin setup due to 7 clutches, multipal auto issues (12 times to be exact)and many other reasons. So far i am very happy with my single.

i need a ride in your truck. Eventually one day i will get one of those sps66's for my truck

500+ is doable with your HX-40 but there are a few things that need to be done to it so it will live for a while. 600+ is no big deal with the 66 or Silver Bullet as I see it.

oh my, ... ... ... ..... hold on while i pick myself up from falling off of my chair. ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... okay, i'm back. I never , ever thought i'd see a forumn about pulling twins and going with singles. Jim, just wait till you figure how to make that single light, ... so much better. Large single, with multistage NOS is the way to go. I finally got my truck with zero turbo lag. Singles are much more reliable, easier to work on, less heat in the cab, less fire danger, just the way to go.

Oh I hear you on that one. I was thinking of using my existing setup as the 1st stage except put a nozzle and jet in it, then buy a . 157 as the second stage then setup the instant spool on a button by the lockup switch.

As it sits right now the . 063 solenoid is plenty of everyday power for normal (or slightly off) person when the bottle is turned on. Another thing si a 60 lb bottle is a must to have in the garage. I just freeze the 15 lb bottle and fill it that way. JetPilot always told me I would like this setup but I always figured it was going backwards... ... not true.
