I noticed that water does not bead on my paint. I assumed (I know bad idea) that the clear coat was the same as the one on my Saturn. After 1 1/2 years on the Saturn, water still beads on the hood with no added anthing.

Should I have to wax the truck? It is only 10 months old.

Wax it. Clear coat is just like clear paint, it just adds shine. #ad

Mad Max,

How does the Collinite hold up compared to Meguires professional Hi-Tech Yellow Wax? Can't say I'm very impressed with the longevity of the Hi-Tech yellow wax.

Over the years I've tried all of the "fancy waxes" (including airplane waxes) and have always ended up going back to plain 'ol Turtle Wax. However, when I did my truck at the 6-month mark, aside from it feeling like I was waxing the Titanic, it felt like the Turtle wax wasn't even going into the clear coat. What makes the Collinite or Meguires any different?

Collinite is a product made for the marine environment. I use 3m handglaze and Clay Magic for clean up and Collinite Fleetwax for the finish. On my wife's black truck, water continues to bead up for months, even after repeated trips through automated car washes.

Of what I've tried in the passed, that seems to be the breaking point for durability.

Now if I can just get a Hinckley so I can use the wax more often.

=)

I don't use wax; I use polish. www.zainobros.com

It's really, really good stuff.

Waxing is necessary even with a clearcoat on top of the paint. I use Meguiars waxes exclusively, as I have had great results in the past with their products and they have been in the business for a long time.

Of course, our trucks are not small and there is an awful lot of surface area to wax. To get over this time consuming task, I wax different sections of my truck everytime I wash it. One time I'll do the roof and hood, another time I'll do the fenders and cab doors, next time I'll do the left side of the bed, etc. Do it in sections and it doesn't have to be such a pain.

Mequires Classic Gold works for me. I also like the paint sealant that Mopar dealers put out but at $25 a bottle I have to let it pass.

Also Red1ton try if you can to put a coat of any kind of carnuba wax on that truck at least evey two months. Regards Pete

RobG, I'll second your nod to Zaino Brothers. I started regularly washing/polishing/waxing my cars back in 1986 with my first car. I still do it as oftern as I can, hopefully at the very least, once every month, depending on weather outside. In summer, I try to do it at least every other weekend, or every weekend. I wanna keep Godzilla lookin' his best when he ain't gettin' dirty #ad

Over the years, I have tried almost every product I could find, just to see which I liked best. I finally settled on the Meguiars product line a few years ago, and was quite happy with them. Then, when I decided to get a Mustang last spring, I found the Corral.net web site (like the TDR but for Mustangs), and Zaino Brothers are the most highly recommended product there, so I bought a series of their polishes last month and tried them last weekend. Oh My God [Chandler Bing!] Wow!! Their polishes are unbelievable! I certainly will be sticking with them for the long term on all my vehicles.

1Tufram, as the Meguiars web site explains it very well, and I don't remember all the specifics, I'll just pass along what I do remember. Polishes help replenish oils and lubricants to the paint. Kind of like putting hand lotion on your rough, dry hands. Or chapstick on your lips. Waxes are a protectant, which should go on over a polish, if both are used. The wax provides protection for the polish, kind of like a raincoat. Glazes I am not familiar with, and so can't comment on. A polish helps renew/maintain the shine of the paint, while waxes mainly help to keep rain/dirt/whatever away from the paint.

Hope this helps,
Tom

I used Simeniz w/ Carnuba. I do my Cummins and '96 gas Ram at the same time. All I need is a cold 12 pack, about 6 hours, a nice day and good technique. Easy Wax on-Easy Wax off #ad
Do it about 3 times a year.

I did my first wax with Mequires Gold paste. The second time, about a month later I needed to wax again. That same day I waxed mama’s SUV, but used a different wax. She was not about to get my Gold. #ad
I washed both vehicles every weekend for four straight weekends. Guess whose vehicle still beaded water? #ad
You got it, mama’s. I removed the old wax and have been using Liquid Glass ever since. I last put Liquid Glass on in October and when I washed it last, about two weeks ago, the water still beads. #ad
You access the Liqiud Glass site from the link in my signature.

Mother's Carnuba California Gold is what I use, it's a high grade carnuba. Asking someone what the best wax is, is like asking what kind of oil to use, everyone has their opinion. My opinion is anything with carnuba in it, silicone waxes are not what they are cracked up to be.

I have a question, my truck has a pinstripe mid body, do I wax over it or around it ?? Kinda curious on what to do with it being that it is time to give it a wax #ad

Right! The Zaino line of polishes are by far the best I have ever used. I've tried Mother's, Meguiar's, Ardex, etc. I polished my truck in September, and if I wash it now, it looks like it was just polished.

Apply wax to the garden variety, well cured pinstripe should not pose a problem. Avoid hitting it with anything abbrasive or any adhesive removers/solvents and you should be fine.

As with anything, try it First on an inconspicious area.

Good Luck.

Max

Ps. When you get finished... . =)

As far as "polish" is concerned I have used a lot of different ones. I have tried the Zaino brothers products. I must have done something wrong, they seem to take forever to "set up", and even after waitng an hour ( in 70 degree temps), it still was a bear to remove, and didn't shine nearly as nice as the Zymol I had previously used. I have gone back to the Zymol, have been happy with it ever since.
