Anyone use the do it yourself paint on bed liners, suchas Herculiner? I'm thinking of doing my door sills, where my boots are starting to rub the paint off when getting in and out. How much clearance is there between the door and the bottom sill? How think does this stuff go on?

Has anyone used it on there trucks in this location? How is it holding up? Is this a pretty easy thing to do?

Thanks in advance, and any other ideas would be well received.

Check out the door sill guards from DC. They work for me and provide all the protection I need. They install in less than 5 minutes and don't cost that much. Got mine at the dealer parts department.

yeah I have sill gaurds ( I think that they are Ventshade brand from Genos) but they leave about a 1/4inch lip right as the sill turns under the truck exposed and this is where my paint is getting rubbed off. I'm down to primer right now and would like to get it covered before it goes to metal. Do the DC guards cover this area?

I have a set bought at Ziebart for $15 or $20. Bought them for 99 1500 Ram I had. When I traded for my diesel, pulled them off 1500 and put them on 2500. Still working fine (with some new stickum foam tape stuff). Quick and easy. Looks good too.

Mine do. slides under the rubber door seal and has a lip that goes over the round part of the sill edge. There are two lips to the door sill I am talking about the first lip, the second lip would would show on the outside of the door. If that is the one you are wanting to cover up then you would have to get something to match your paint because it would show big time.

I did it!!

I got a gallon of Herculiner last summer. I did the door sills, my nerf bars, and rocker panels, two good thick coats on everything, and absolutely no door clearance or closure problems.

I don't have any pictures to post, but if you want, I can take a couple pictures of the sills.

I would REALLY RELLY REALLY like to see some pictures Tom. I have been thinking about doing the same thing. I would like to see how it looks after 6 months of wear!!!!

Guys,

I'll try to get a couple pix tonight after work and post them.

HO - Herculiner is just another type of paint/spray on bed liner material. The commercially applied brands most common are Line-X, Rhinolining and Permatex that I know of. Herculiner is one brand for the do-it-yerself crowd. I bought my gallon of it online, and have seen it in quart cans at Kragen. I paid ~$90 for my gallon, and the kit included a couple of brushes and a roller for application.

As Morph pointed out, be extremely careful when applying it. Wear rubber/latex gloves if at all possible, as it is extremely sticky and does not come off of skin, clothes, anything!!!

NOTE - the directions state that (if I remember right) xylene and something else are the only solvents that can clean the brushes after you use this stuff, and since I only had regular laquer thinner/mineral spirits, I tried using that. Just like the directions indicated, laquer thinner doesn't even phase this stuff... .

There is a guy locally that does the Rhino liner installs and he did his Dodge 1500 on the lower panels from front to rear. Looks very durable but his has faded, which does not look good.

Do it yourself bedliner products

Somebody on Dodgetalk.com posted a note about a Canadian product similar to Herculiner. So a search in there for bedliner or something similar. It looked better than the Herculiner... .

Do a search on Durabak. It comes in a lot of colors and is very tough stuff. I used black on the complete underside of my Jeep including the fenders, and blue on the interior. I like IT!! I haven't seen any indication where its chipped from rocks, and the interior shows no scuff marks after 3 years years of rough use. Its very easy to use. You can spray it on or roll it on, they supply some roller brushes that work very well. As a matter of fact, getting ready to Durabak the interior floorboards of my wife's CJ-7.
