Probably a stupid question but I've got an '05 with 150K on the clock and stock exhaust system. I've heard that over time diesel mufflers can become plugged with soot, is this really true or one of them there legends?

More of a chance they rust out internally, fall apart and plug the out port than any plugging from soot.

In the olden days they fell apart inn side from the rust cause they didn't get hot enough the get rid of the moisture in the system. Every two years you replaced the muffler.
Short drives is not good.

And after they started falling apart inside the broken baffles would plug them off and on when they rattled into the right spot, maybe that is what drove the "plugged with soot" rumor??

Full of it?

Ever hear those TV commercials that start out saying "...by the time the average American male reaches 50, he has over 5 lbs of red meat clogging his intestinal tract..." and then goes on to sell you the latest colon cleanse product? I recently spent some time with our local ME (medical examiner) and I asked him about it...and he said he's never seen any clogged colon's in the hundreds of autopsies he's done.....except for some politicians. Then I queried the guys at Best Muffler and they said the same thing....the only clogs they ever see is if the muffler 'guts' fall apart. So....our mufflers are not 'full-of-it'....but some politicians are. :-laf
