I'm no expert on Chrysler by any means, but before Daimler got involved Chryler products were pretty much junk relatively speaking. Not that they are making high quality products now either, but they have come a long way.
Actually Chrysler made great strides through the late 80 and the 90's prior to the merger with Mercedes. They were producing some great vehicles in all lines and had a steadily growing market share. That is what made the merger possible.
