IMO, if Daimler hadn't taken charge there wouldn't be a Chrysler right now. . If Ford and GM are on some form of life support, then I doubt Chrysler would still be around as the 3rd place finisher. . I'm no expert on Chrysler by any means, but before Daimler got involved Chryler products were pretty much junk relatively speaking. Not that they are making high quality products now either, but they have come a long way.

Actually Chrysler made great strides through the late 80 and the 90's prior to the merger with Mercedes. They were producing some great vehicles in all lines and had a steadily growing market share. That is what made the merger possible.

The relationship between Cummins and DCX is quite good right at the moment. Cummins has three DCX platforms were Cummins is the exclusive engine supplier (Diesel Ram and two Freightliners). While, you cannot get a ISM or ISX in a class 8 Freightliner, the relationship has improved vs. where it was in 2002. In fact, the outgoing head of Freightliner told the trade press in the fall that he felt that there was a role for Cummins in the future.

Several factors in the Cummins/DCX relationships favor.

1. The agreement runs until 2012.

2. The MB MBE 900 is about 275lbs heavier than the ISB Cummins.

3. If Dodge drops the ISB, Cummins will sell to Ford, Toyota, Nissan, ect.

4. The head of the Chrysler group is once again an American.

5. Huge customer support for the ISB/Ram.

6. Any MB diesel is more likely in a Dodge 1500 where there is currently no diesel option. This may very well happen in 2007. MB will add five new diesels in the US starting in the fall.

I have had numerous discussion with people in Auburn Hills. They have no plans to phase out the Cummins in the foreseeable future.

I agree. But when CEOs get greedy thats when they push to sell ,or merge the company and make themselves lots of money.

Back to cluless salesmen. At the stock show the other night, I was looking at a Mega Cab dually and asked the salesman when the duallies would hit the dealerships. He quickly said "about 5-6 months ago". I said "duallies?" to clarify what I asked him and he said "yep". I thought to myself "whatever".

I'm always amazed at how little some salesmen know about the product they are representing. Some of 'em are pathetic. But then, some really are experts.

Man I love the bashing of sales people. Which is true most sales people are clueless and do not take the time and effort to know there product. I've been here at this Dodge dealership for 12 years and have seen probably 70 sales people young and old come and go and 95% of them do not take the job serious and make a commenent as a career to be in the business.

What I have heard is that MB engine will be avaiable as a option in the 4500 & 5500 trucks coming out soon hopefully in 2007 models. I know I can not wait, been waiting since 2002 when they took away the cab-chassis. I can sell about 40 4500-5500 cab-chassis a year to just Les Schwab Tires if they were avaiable. Right now they have been buying Fords because they have the higher GVW models avaivable. Been selling the dodge's for years to the corporation, but they would love to buy Dodge's if I had the models avaivable, they prefer the Cummins over the power-choke. The purchasing person for the Corpation drives a Dodge that I sold him and can not wait for a higher GVW Dodge for there crane trucks that they outfit.

The 06 Mega Dually is now avaiable to order as of 01-09-06.

Also this is just rumor but what I have heard is cummins is trying not to play the HP cat and mouse game anymore and concertrating of better fuel consumption because of fuel prices.

Long live the inline 6 cummins!!

Ford owns 20% of cummins. I-6's are billion times better than a V-8... yes i said billion... :D We have 2 Massey Ferguson tractors on our farm, one of which has a V-8 the other an I-6..... SAME TRACTORS,SAME BRAND OF MOTORS!(Perkins), but the V-8 has been rebuilt 4 times in 16,000hrs, and the I-6 is still goin strong at 22,000... . no rebuilds. A rep told me that in 2007 ford supposidly is unvailing either twin turbo powerstroke, or a cummins(whichever tests best), dodge is getting a Mercedes and also the allison auto in the near future after that. Also "SUPPOSIDLY" cat is working on a C7 for chevy. FORKIN RUMORS! What is not a rumor is that Mercedes motors in big trucks in europe are making almost 14 mpg! IN A LARGE CAR! That to me is unreal. Now Im gonna go put on my flak helmet and kevlar vest. With that, I bid you a'due! :-laf

Ford DID own 18% of Cummins in the mid-1990's. However, it was all sold after Ford dropped out of the heavy truck business.

Chevy already buys the C7 Cat for the Kodiak. At 1300+ lbs. , it is way too heavy for a pickup.

Ford will be going to a bored out 6. 0 that will now be 6. 4 with twin turbos. This will be done to get away from the variable geometry turbo that uses veins. The veins are very trouble prone. The alternatives are to use the sliding ring developed and patented by Cummins or twins. Detroit and Volvo(Mack) are going to buy turbos from Cummins (Holset). The Cummins ISB is the exclusive property of DCX in a pickup until 2012.

14 mpg in a class 8? The MBE 4000 cannot match the Cummins ISM in the US and the ISM is considered to have the best fuel economy in Europe. With all of the great European diesels, why does Cummins sell quite a few ISM's in Europe? Wal-mart just announced a 5 year project to achieve 13 mpg in the US. If 14 mpg were possible in Europe, they would be working with Freightliner/MB rather than International and Cummins.

Also, the I-5 in the Sprinter is an MB engine.

Just a quick question, but have you ever seen under the hood of a ford diesel? My dad has an 05 and i swear there is not enough room for anything under there. How does ford plan on making room for a twin turbo set-up? Well i guess that will be pretty amazing to see if they come out with it. Still wouldn't buy one but oh well.

About a month or so ago I got to look at one for the first time. I never would have guessed it would be that cramped. Looking at that and then mine is like looking at mine and then a 1st gen. Unbelieveable how much better Ford thinks those trucks look with all that plastic crap under there. Not that I would have anyways, but after seeing that I don't think I could ever own one.

How does ford plan on making room for a twin turbo set-up?

By replacing it with a rotary girder thingy

When ever I see the under-hood shot of a new PS, I'm always reminded of the junk drawer in my garage. Crap everywhere. :-laf

My chips are on a MB option for the Dodge trucks in the future. Now for the really important question... .

Will the TDR actually have a section for it??

I'm surprised this article hasn't been brought up yet... .

Toyota/Cummins

Especially this part. .

A second source added fire to this rumor by telling PUTC that DaimlerChrysler is working fast and furious to lock up Cummins as its exclusive diesel supplier, thereby shutting Toyota out of this engine option. Apparently Cummins has wiggle room in its current DCX contract to speak with other truck manufacturers.

Let us all revel in this, Cummins will be in a pick-up for quite a while, perhaps not dodge but some pickup manufacturer will be using a Cummins. Why?, according to most stuff you read Cummins is ahead of the game in the emmissions department and ALL you damn oil heads (me too) will switch truck brands rather than engine brands.

Imagine the arguments that go on in the corporate board rooms at DC. One side says they want to use an in-house engine (mb, or detroit) and the other side says "but our customers love the Cummins and if we let Cummins go someone else is going to pick them up and all our loyal customers will be buying those trucks not ours".

I think it's quite funny how all the newfangled v8's come out looking to trump Cummins and their lowly I6 and within a year or so Cummins bi**h slaps 'em.

And if you think Cummins is going to "go by the wayside" look at what the stock has done in the last two years. Record profits and huge worldwide contracts simply mean that we all get to buy Cummins powered pickups well into the future. I personally don't care who's truck they put in, I bought Cummins not Dodge (though I do think Dodge did a nice job on the 3rd gens). Take it easy gents, I can't wait to see what happens!!!

I have to suspect that if the manufacturers would keep thier noses out of the engine architecture(Ford and GM) all of these trucks would have I-6 engines. I have found a way to blow up every V style engine I have ever had including Detroit 8. 2t, 7. 3l, 6. 9l but it took a turbo. I-6 motors seem more durable and have held up to my abuse for many more miles, except for a cracked 99 block(lock&stitch rocks).

i paid 30+k for my cummins & got a free truck with it. best engine i've ever had & will probably buy what ever it's put in after dodge. a mercedes engine isn't even close to being enough to keep me in a dodge. the cummins has made a good truck great.
