a mercedes engine isn't even close to being enough to keep me in a dodge.

What are the flaws in Mercedes engines that leads you away from them?

I don't know enough about their design to have an opinion...

i don't think there's anything wrong with a mercedes engine but my preference is cummins & if dodge decided to begin installing mercedes engines instead of cummins i'd prefer going where cummins goes. i bought the truck for the engine. before messing around with a new engine maybe they ought to get the rest of their house in order & deal with the mediocre trannys, thin paint, bad balljoints & a few of the other "quirks" that are annoying. why mess with a good thing but then again look at ford's big F/U with the "new & improved" powerstroke. the powerstroke is crap, the duramax is crap. if the mfg's want to make things interesting they should begin developing lighter weight medium duty diesels suitable for use in a pickup with cat & detroit. ideally it would be nice to go into a gmc, dodge, chevy or ford dealer & be able to pick a cummins, cat or detroit backed by an allison, spicer or some other truck transmission just like buying a big truck.

I figured you had some tangible reason for prefering Cummins over Mercedes. Just wondered what it is...

Like I said, I don't know anything about Mercedes engines. I know enough about the Powerstroke and the DMax to not trust them.

In a few more years when I'm ready for a new diesel pickup I'm gonna do the same thing I did this time. I will browse all of the big three forums and see what the owners say about their own trucks. You can read all of the manufacturers hype, but the the real deal is from the owners themselves. We are the true testing grounds for these machines. It was these forums that swayed me to Dodge. Also the test drive was the most gas like feel. :-laf

But isn't the main reason most large trucks have an inline 6 is that it can be rebuilt in the chassis?

So do we have any takers for a Cummins in the Toyota. That perfect frontal impact rating that Toyota was so proud of on dateline a while back might have a little different outcome with some real weight behind it. Personally I hope Toyota all the worst of luck. Right now their Dakota sized "half ton" just isnt so impressive to me. Then again I can be somewhat of a "hater". :)

Where did that "Ford owns Cummins" rumor come from anyway? I actually had a Dodge salesman tell me that. I had to print off the FAQs page of Cummins website (where it states emphatically that Ford owns no part of Cummins) and show it to him before he would believe me.

It comes from the fact that several years ago Ford did in fact own about 20% of cummins stock, Cummins bought it back, however for some reason Ford guys can't accept that Ford has no ties to Cummins any more so the rumor lives on and on.

Engine envy would be my best guess.

When Ford still built class 8 trucks (L-series conventionals, CL-9000, Aeromax), Cummins was the OEM standard equipment engine, usually the L10. In an effort to solidify the relationship, Ford bought stock in Cummins, less than 10 percent of common stock (same type any of us can buy), but just enough to get them a seat on the board. When Ford sold the class 8 line to Freightliner (became the Sterling brand) in 1997, Ford also sold back the Cummins stock, since there was no further need for the relationship.

Because Ford owned that stock, the "rumor" began... more accurately, it was a severe exaggeration of the truth. Ford truck owner continue to play it up because they think it's something they can hold over Dodge. . that at any minute, Ford can direct Cummins to pull the ISBe from the Ram and start installing it in the F-250/550.

If a frog only had wings!!!!!! I'll bet the folks at Ford, Dodge and Cummins that are in the "know" sit back and read TDR like some folks do the funny paper.

Here's the scoop

Now here it is for all to read. Dodge has the contract w/cummings 2010 ford has a primary interest in Cummings.

Gm is using Izuze for their diesel making it very costly to repair .

Dodge tried the MB diesel 5 cyl. with poor success and i understand they were working w/ CAT to build a scaled down version for pickup.

Here's the way it will work out.

Toyota will comsume GM Saab

Ford will buyout Mazda and then be taken over by Nissan

MB will acquire VW.

Diesel fuel will be $ 4. 00 a gal and we will all be driving hybrids from Honda at 85 miles to the gallon

... and everyone will move into a high-rise condo downtown and walk their chiwawua dog down to the park on the weekends.
