Does $2. 00 diesel justify the use of synthetic motor oil changed on factory recommended 7500 mile interval?
Assuming that I can buy Delo 400 for about $17 for 3 gallons and Amsoil 100% snythetic is about $60 for 3 gallons, can I save enough on fuel to pay the $43 extra for synthetic over 7500 miles?
For the sake of the math, let's say that I get 17 MPG using conventional oil. Total fuel cost for 7500 miles at 17 MPG and $2. 00 / gallon is $882. To save the $43 for the synthetic oil, I'd have to see a milage improvement of about 5%, which would be less than 1 MPG. If I can save the $43 in fuel costs, then all the other advantages of synthetic oil could be enjoyed for free.
Light 'em if you got 'em.
