Does $2. 00 diesel justify the use of synthetic motor oil changed on factory recommended 7500 mile interval?

Assuming that I can buy Delo 400 for about $17 for 3 gallons and Amsoil 100% snythetic is about $60 for 3 gallons, can I save enough on fuel to pay the $43 extra for synthetic over 7500 miles?

For the sake of the math, let's say that I get 17 MPG using conventional oil. Total fuel cost for 7500 miles at 17 MPG and $2. 00 / gallon is $882. To save the $43 for the synthetic oil, I'd have to see a milage improvement of about 5%, which would be less than 1 MPG. If I can save the $43 in fuel costs, then all the other advantages of synthetic oil could be enjoyed for free.

Light 'em if you got 'em. :)

My mileage is up but other factors are at play. Went back to stock tires. Summer fuel. Different driving style. Mileage went from 10 to 17. This tank is looking like 15 though. Still early.

I tried synthetic and didn't notice any difference in fuel mileage. Summer fuel brought my mileage back up. Last week we went on 2 trips. The first fillup was 21. 3 mpg and the second fillup was 21. 1.

Played this game in a '91 Caravan with a 3. 3/604RE (UGH!). Mileage changed zip. Zero. Nada. Of course, your mileage may vary! :D
