No need to wait, the info in this thread is better than the article in my opinion. The only thing is whether or not you have a 4WD as to whether you go at it from above or below. The main things to do are to get you about 2' of 1/2" fuel hose for a loop from the pump to the pre-filter, pull one of the bolts and get you a longer one or a couple of studs, I would go with studs. I would guess that the bolts that are in there now are 8X25 with a 10mm head (I didn't take time to check them out in the midst of my nightmare!).

If I had the above mentioned items on hand before I started the job it wouldn't have been too bad at all, except for my fuel spill.

Don't be scared!

Ugh... . meteric. :( If it was SAE I'd have it right here.

Mine's a 4x4.

I'm sure I have 2' of the proper spec hose here, but thanks for mentioning it. I dont like suprises. :D

OK!! What length studs? Was the pump any quieter??

I bought the only one in SLC from Freightliner, no gaskets in box, made my own from material I had, In-case I had a break down while on my trip. above good info.

Thanks

Marv.

Another alternative on replacing that short piece of hose from the lift pump to the prefilter. I installed a Racor fuel filter/water separator on a homemade bracket on the firewall. I ran fuel hose from the lift pump to the inlet of the Racor and then from the outlet of the Racor to the inlet of the prefilter. I'm using 10 micron filters on the Racor and change it several times before changing the stock filter. I also added the water in fuel sensor for the Racor and moved the wiring from the stock filter to the Racor. The beauty of this modification is the Racor has the primer/pump on the top of the filter housing within easy reach. After a filter change, it's very easy to reprime the system until you hear the fuel going thru the overflow valve then just start the engine. Also with the clear plastic on the bottom of the filter, you have a visual indicator of the quality of fuel you're getting because you can see the water or trash resting on the bottom of the bowl. I've put over 100 K miles on the truck since making this change and so far it's running great.

Overall length on the studs would be around 1 3/4"-2".

Yes, the pump was quieter than the old one. The old one had a little tap going.

As far as the gaskets go, order them if you have to. The cummins part number is 3939258.

I'm not sure but I think you can bypass the lift pump with the fass or a inline pump. The advantage is when you turn the key it pumps fuel.
