Don't forget to sniff the nozzle

I have got into the habit of sniffing the diesel pump nozzle before I pump any into my tank.

Paid off in the upper Yukon. The Diesel pump was set off a ways from the gas pumps and the sign above it said Diesel. The pump said diesel also. It was not, it was gasoline.

Its last sale was for $138, and then I remembered the big Class A motor home a ways back the road with its flashers on and a guy standing outside of it looking bewildered.

I went across the road and filled up.

Call me crazy, but I've been fill up at Flying J at Gretna all the time. Since I live 17 miles from it, I take 2-5 gallon jugs and fill them up first. I figure if it smells like gas, I don't fill up the truck. Plus it's cheaper there and better than some of the local Gas stops in town... I think if I ever plan a trip going somewhere I don't know the places to fill up, I'll take my 5 gallon jugs and use those to fill up first just to be safe... hate to be on the side of the rode with gas in the system!!

Wipe sniff stick

We've really got a high-caliber sort driving the fuel tankers don't we. Or maybe the tankers get loaded wrong. Somebody is F-in up somewhere.



I always wipe the nozzle and sniff. I once picked up a nozzle that had about 1/4 pound of crud on the end of it. So now it's wipe-sniff-stick.

I too have gotten into the habit of sniffing the nozzle before fueling. I started doing it after reading about another person getting gasoline out of a "Diesel" pump. Other people at the pumps might look at me a little weird for doing this, but at least I won't end up filling my truck up with gasoline.

Good to know there are others

I always pump a tenth or so in the tank, pull the nozzle, and smell it. I get some pretty strange looks, but I have rebuilt a couple industrial diesels that ran (briefly until they sieze) on gasoline, not pretty.
