I've heard of the 2nd gen guys drag racing in 4x4 and not toasting their transfercase. And I know they have a different kind of case. But could the 205 case take the stress of doing that?

Not that I wish to try. Whenever I ran my truck I just lived with the tire spin and ran 2wd.

Just curious to know if anyone has ever done it and what did it do.

I would think the biggest worry would be the condition of the front end and the front driveline angles. If your axle u-joints are crusty from never turning, and your driveline angles are on the severe side (like mine), I would think it'd be like racing a paint shaker. You also wouldn't want to make any turns on pavement with the case in 4x4. I would think you'd want to engage it when you get lined up and kick it into 2wd before you turn on the return road.

Dave,

I just drive around the water for burnouts then get straightened up and pull the transfercase into 4x4. It really doesn't seem too hard on it at all. In my case I think the first thing to go will be the Getrag. My best 0-60 foot in 2wd is something around 2. 5. In 4x4 it's 1. 97.

Well I have never had a problem with the transfercase on the strip, but I did blow my headgasket and fry my clutch. With an auto I would think it would even be better because you will have some pressure on all of the drive terrane. With a stick you are just sitting there and then you drop the clutch. I guess you could hold the brake/gas with one foot and slip the snot out of the clutch to build boost and then you would keep some pressure on the drive terrain. I am not an expert by all means, but I say go for it. I plan on getting back to the track sometime soon, and I know that if I don't leave in four wheel drive, it makes for a very exciting run. Even in 4th and 5th gear the back end wants to get loose.

Well, it just makes me nervous because of the ratio difference between the axles. OK, maybe the next time I run it I'll try it just to see what it does. I do know I have a traction problem with 2wd.

thanks

Stomp, glhs are you two running 4HI all the way down the track? I know the 2nd genners shift out of 4hi soon after takeoff. I know mine would never come out of 4hi that fast. I'd probly have to stop, try, back up, try it again. So it would be a waste of time for me to try to shift back to 2HI.

What rpm are you two at when you dump the clutch?

I leave it in 4HI the whole way down the track. It would take an act of congress to get mine back in 2HI after take off. I usually leave at around 2000 rpm's. I try not to dump the clutch I kind of feather it on takeoff. If I dumped it it would probably stall out.

Thanks Stomp. I'm giving this some thought at IRP this weekend. Just for laughs to see what kind of time I can run. Will have to see how big of a wait it would be etc.

" I know the 2nd genners shift out of 4hi soon after takeoff. "

they may try this, but i belive their TC is like the one in my jeep, in that it shifts by detent balls and springs. i can shift the jeep back to 2wd under power, but it doensn't actualy "shift" untill power is let off, kinda like a manual trans falling out of third if you let off the throtle too fast. (don't ask)

i was reading some other conversations on this same thing. seemed a few guys were just running 4x4 the whole way. i have never raced but i would think that reaching down that far would be a little scary racing down the track. would 2k take offs in 3rd trash an sb ofe. should i think about 2nd.

205 + Heavy Foot

Hi Dave, ... Had a Chevy 3/4 ton-4x4 with a de-tuned square port 454 in it. Did lots of 4 wheel smoke shows and 1/8 mile dragging with it. The 205 is one tough transfer case... See you again in October at PDR ?????... Greg

My experience with 205's is that you can get them to shift in and out at speed by beginning to apply pressure to the shifter as you let off the power. How you could do this while drag racing and still have a time, I do not have a clue.

Re binding: The D44's in front sometimes (atleast on the old Fords) were labelled 4. 09 while the rear D60 was labelled 4. 11, so there could be some inherent binding. Solution is to have enough power to keep'em spinning! Oo.

I wouldn't worry about the ratio difference. You could cause more difference by having your front and rear tires at slightly different pressures than a 4. 09/4. 11 difference...

I race my 96 in 4 wheel the whole track. MY best time is 13. 6 crossing the finish line at 98. 9 mph. I havent had a single problem. I have 420 rwhp. Just make sure it is in 4 hi. But driving like this, you may plan on breaking somthing. The way I see it you will spin your tires in 2 wd if your going to achive fast time
